Possible PVC spots on Reverse of 1905 Barber Dime

ConnecticoinConnecticoin Posts: 13,113 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have a nicely toned 1905 Barber Dime that I had graded PCGS MS65 about 10 years ago. I was taking photos of the coin and it looks like a couple of green spots have started at the 6:30 and 8:30 positions on the reverse. What do you think? Looks like I will need to send it in for spot review :(

Spot review was free. Conservation is not.
I also don't see the problem(s) as critical based on placement and perceptual dissonance.
Here's a seemingly cynical view about a superficially really nice coin. Send it to CAC :p
Just a wild-ass guess, but those are just toning flecks from this distance. ;)

For being that thick, those spots aren't green enough to be caused by PVC, IMO.

The spot at 8:30 looks like a very dark green pebble.

It was stickered by CAC three years ago. Don't recall seeing the spots then, so either they are new, or CAC did not think they were a problem or did not notice them.

Unless things changed, I would think they would remove PVC as part of the grading guarantee if it is indeed PVC.

Perhaps a phone conversation prior to sending it in... and a word of caution, it may look worse when that dark spot is removed... Cheers, RickO

If you see GREEN, I believe you. The small one looks green to me. That coin needs to be "fixed" pronto before the surface is etched. That will leave a gray spot when conserved. The tiny spot will probably come off w/o a trace.

I only know of one major TPGS that conserves coins for free (if requested or after gaining permission) before they are slabbed. It is not practical. :)

if you do it now, looks like a quick fix. I think if you really want to keep it, I would do it.

Connecticoin, I like your avatar. It sure beats all those "Raider Nation" bumper stickers that the low riders around here are so fond of. Now. .....back to coins!

Get that into the hands of an expert and have it removed. It should be a pretty easy exorcism.

If I owned it and was concerned, I'd crack it, I'm a skilled conservationist, but this is in the first chapter (or 3).
Assuming PCGS and JA like this piece suggests further what I already see. Consoling, since they had the coin in-hand ;)
A three second swirling dab (or 3) with an acetone Q-tip swirled on the spot (deposit of gunk, not carbon) should take this problem away., PCGS Restoration Service will do the same for a bit more, but would likely rinse the whole coin, risking revelation of a hairline etc. :)
More towards the "mildly annoying" end of the spectrum than the "alarming" one. This one's a slam dunk. :#

No. Roy Rogers, The Lone Ranger, and Leave It To Beaver. That's all I watch. What else is there? But still....Lisa is, aaah!
