Do you stop to pick up a cent on the ground?

CoinstartledCoinstartled Posts: 10,135 ✭✭✭✭✭

What about nickels, dimes and quarters.

A nickel is my minimum!

Only if it's head's-side-up. Mrs. VDB believes that picking up a tail's-side penny is bad luck. Why risk it? (Plus, I already know it's a Lincoln Memorial).

    Kind regards,

Yes normally, but the other day while showing at an art show, I saw a crusted zincoln on the ground (too gross for me to pick up) where about 100,000 people walked over it and no one picked it up.

Yes, unless the cent is in a puddle or really gross.

Cents, most of the time unless they are really crusty or in a puddle of goop. Higher denominations always.

I have heard that. Anyone know the source of that superstitution. Can't be too old as a cent used to have more value.

Yes to all, unless there are too many witnesses, then I might pass by a cent.

I also pick up stray tire weights in the parking lot (free lead!) and once in a while random metal pieces such as large washers, bolts, and the like. I also cut off the copper cords on any small appliances I throw away. (I must have grown up during the Great Depression in a previous life).

I don’t want pennies and always tell cashiers to keep them. I pick up quarters.

Definitely. One cent coins have not been minted here since 1987 so it would be quite unusual to find one.

I remember reading somewhere that Bill Gates makes more than $100 in the time that it would take him to bend over and pick up a $100 bill.

No on pennies unless it is in a PCGS holder. (It has yet to happen) I have a friend who picked up a penny and ended up having back surgery from something going wrong in his back at that exact moment. I now wonder if it was tails side up??!!

Didn't someone on the forum pick up a street penny and it turned out to be a wide or narrow AM worth 100s or 1,000s?

Well, which is it: "very happy" or "53 years together" - I don't think it can be both. :D

I found free admission to a state park laying on the ground. I don't know how someone can get out of their car and spill a handful of coins. Parking meters are great places for ground scores. One thing I love about the city is there's always a coin to pickup somewhere.

  • blitzdudeblitzdude Posts: 6,581 ✭✭✭✭✭

Negative on the pennies. I actually throw all mine on the ground when received as change so others can pick them up. Nickels and above, I absolutely pickup.

    Yes.

My reasoning? I do (and have done) tons of things to get money... some of which I'm not overly proud of... this is money... why not snap it up if it's free?

It nice when you pick up a penny on the ground on your way into a store with 2 twenties and your bill is $20.01.

  • AzurescensAzurescens Posts: 2,783 ✭✭✭✭✭

Oh. Oops. Free admission to a state park in loose change this past week*

I'll pick them up, unless they are in ugly goop. Why not? It's one of my few forms of tax-free income.

This very thing has happened to me at the 'home' grocery store within the last ten days. Nice feeling to salvage the second twenty.

One time when I got in a cab to go to work I found six $100 bills in the back-seat floorboard. I chatted up the cabbie enough to figure out they were not his (he had just had an airport fare). I went to work and made $100 in tips that night and found $2 on the floor.

    Kind regards,

One of my cousins used to take her husband to the Honolulu airport, frequently, for work-related travel - late 1980s - she always claimed the Japanese tourists of that era were forever losing large bills.

Next time you get your interest bearing checking account statement, look at the interest you get a month with a few thousand dollars in the account. If I ever saw more that 3c I would faint! Over a years time, I know for 100% that I always find more loose change than interest.

There are two kinds of people in the world. Those who mostly look up and those who mostly look down. I am in the latter group. A 14K gold money clip, one 22K earing, and a folded up $20 bill are my best "finds." I'm still hoping to find a 1 carat flawless loose diamond.

A former NGC grader, was the best "finder" I ever knew. He was always finding money on the ground. Guess it is an "eye" for the hunt. B)

Probably too cold to have a fountain as in Italy so the square must suffice.

Since I don't declare these found riches on my taxes, a cent is worth nearly 1½¢, so yes I pick them up . . .

Need the following OBW rolls to complete my 46-64 Roosevelt roll set:
    1947-P & D; 1948-D; 1949-P & S; 1950-D & S; and 1952-S.
Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!

A few years ago when gold was at its highest I read an article about a guy who was making hundreds of $ a day crawling around the sidewalks and streets of NYC looking for lost ear rings, etc. And you just know there must be a pile of loose diamonds out there somewhere that fell out of loose settings.
