I have a lot of experience in collecting toned ASE's. The Trueviewed example as well as the two in the photo are all man made. Unfortunately, PCGS holdered hundreds if not thousands of these in the last 5 years. I can't tell you why, but I did raise the question repeatedly here on the forums as well as contacting PCGS by phone. While searching ebay in the last 5 years, you could see a pattern developing. Many times the same sellers had very similar toning on different years of ASE's. The only toned ASE's I now am confident weren't manmade, are the PCI holdered ones. They have a distinctive toning pattern, especially on the reverse. The coin above will be difficult to sell because the collectors in the know recognize it as man made. Please don't take offense, as I am trying to help you understand what's going on out there.
Nice toning on old silver coins and buffs gets some love here, but not too many like it on ASE's. Looks like some in the background came from old PCI holders.

You do realize that these are three pictures of the same coin, right?
Anyway, I don’t disagree that it is AT. While I am far from certain about the origin of the color, I can tell you that it isn’t going to appeal to a lot of toned coin collectors. The TrueView makes it look significantly brighter than your pics, but also more artificial. That color blue is usually something to avoid.

Not the same coin. Last picture, two coins pictured to the left are not the OP's coin.

I am not questioning your explanation and experience, but more of the Secure holder. I thought the Secure holdering (over the regular holders) process would pick up on AT, no?

Ah ok, I see what you mean. Thanks for clarifying. I know you have a lot of experience with toned SAEs so I was confused!
@bolivarshagnasty I too have collected toned ASE’s.for years. This to me looks natural.
I have had many that sat in aftermarket holders for years and toned just like that. The reverse was
facing down.
Stef, We'll have to agree to disagree. The 10+ pages of toned ASE's didn't just happen by accident. Demand drove the market and there were those who took advantage. Many of these look like the OP's example.

I understand the skepticism, which is why I made this post. The coin won't be hard to sell, however, as there are people that buy these up simply because they are straight graded in the holder.
They will tone quickly, as stated. Very quickly.
How they tone (when "natural") has a lot to do with the environment.
What are they touching?
What is the humidity?
What is the temp?
I have had some in those cardboard holders "It's a boy!" "Congratulations" etc, that have toned very quickly and slightly differently depending on what colors were on the cardboard.
I've had some on display on a plastic tri-holder that didn't tone from the plastic but from the air. One that was over a heat vent (coin was in the windowsill where I could look at it all the time....didn't even pay attention to the vent) turned ugly brown very quickly (I got my ducts cleaned right after noticing that...and they were DIRTY! Tells me that the dirty air was partly the culprit).
I had one in a velvet case on display. Red velvet. Coin toned wispy and with some reds.
I've never done the sulfur (matches or anything that people have mentioned), so I can't speak to that one. I've never done a potato (that some used to mention) or the oven, so I can't speak to those.
I've never tried to artificially tone, nor artificially increase the rate of toning, but from the ones I have seen tone under my care, I wouldn't buy the one in the OP....first off, fingerprints turn me off. Secondly, the color difference from left side to right side.....something about it....
As for the photos of the 'catseye' ones in the op.....PCI holder toning can give ones similar to that.....but, so can artificial toning. Have to see them, hopefully inhand, to make a decision (or, a really good photo)

There have been a lot of great discussions on these boards about this subject. Do some investigation into these threads and see if you still want to spend your dollars on these coins. Someone posted this pic in one of the threads. Lot of folks love the striped ASE toners.
That is certainly not a candidate for NT collectors... And yes, as @bolivarshagnasty has said, there are many, many AT ASE's in slabs now....Certainly easy to do... but that one is especially ugly. Cheers, RickO

I'm very happy that we agree to disagree, keeps the conversation going, therefore the learning continues.
The link you provided unfortunately has real toned ones mined in with a ton of at'd ones. The natural being a strong minority. I have found that when it has whipsy toning it is usually natural. And as far as the PCI toning goes, yes that is usually the best way to tell nowadays but they are trying to imitate that type too. And dont even get me started on the striped waffle toning.......what a joke!
But after a while the PCI toning gets boring and would be nice to have normal natural toning......but again only my opinion. And another thing to keep in mind that even though the coin is cracked from the PCI holder it can toady change after a few years as I have posted here on the forum. Not all do this but some do.

That ASE is currently in a PCGS holder. The guy who did it was arguing with a bunch of "us" on reddit when he said it was NT and was caused from sitting in a sticky cardboard mailer. Regardless of what PCGS thinks, I wouldn't want that coin and that is part of the reason why I think PCGS has tightened up over the last 6 months....even though there are a ton of these still floating around.
Slimshady, I believe the stripes are running in a different direction in the TV. Same principle. A lot of these began showing up early in 2017.
Has PCGS stopped straight grading these? Or are they still?
I can't answer that. As someone else mentioned, PCGS seems to have tightened up on toned ASE's. Since I don't submit these, I have no idea if they are still making it through.
Did you find any of the old threads on this subject?

On the OP. I like it for around melt plus a dollar. It's an ounce of silver which I'd buy as such.
Unfortunately, you'd never be able to get it for that price.
