My first graded Indian Head Penny... It's a good one!

Spartcom5Spartcom5 Posts: 399 ✭✭✭

Picked this up, 1901 1 cent. I got a very good deal since they priced it as if it were a BN color not RD. Never been into pennies but this got me hooked! This coin is simply amazing, definitely a keeper for quite some time. My pictures aren't the best as always but PCGS makes up for it!

I love IHC's it's one of my favorite series, but that blackish spot on the reverse of your example just killed me.
I really hope you did get a good deal on your coin.

The spot is a bit distracting but the obverse is terrific (and hammered). There is a big price difference between BN and RD at the 65 level so I'm sure you could make quite a bit of money on it if you want to eventually trade for one without the spot.

It was $190 and I already had an offer to sell it for $350... The spot doesn't really affect me that much.

Very nice IHC.... good grade.... If the spot does not bother you, then enjoy a very nice coin... Cheers, RickO

Congrats. The obverse is fantastic. Detail is great. As others have said, the spot would kill it for me, but if you like it, enjoy it.

I’d be tempted to take a profit here & turn it into a coin without distracting issues, but that’s just me.

Nice, in the old holder days, this would have been a 66!

I would take a quick profit.

Yes it's a very nice Indian cent and a nice grade. The reason they and me dislike the spot is because it may get bigger and will kill the cents eye appeal.

But you said this is your 1st cent and it's a very good start it's a very nice coin. But Maybe you can flip it and get a MS66 without a spot copper is a tough alloy to work with It will spot and will turn brown if you don't take care of it.
So the key is to find one with out a spot in red or brown, Some dates will be easier to find then others raw or graded with out spots and when you do grab it. In less your going to flip it and not put it in your collection and make a profit on it.

It will get bigger any one have a pic of that MS70 Lincoln they paid like $12K for it now it's like a MS-68 with a spot on his nose, I think it was this one and are host steeped up and paid for it. I don't have the after pic.

There is no Santa Claus in numismatics. The OP's coin was priced at BN because it won't bring RD money with that spot.

Thanks guys, i may sell it or even try to trade. The spot didnt bother me but now that i know it can get bigger its gotta go. Was $350 a fair offer? $350 cash in person.

Spartcom, As a collector, selling is as much a teacher as searching/buying is. Won't know if you overpaid until you try and sell.

I know it sounds confusing but to be clear i paid $190 and someone made an offer of $350 to buy it from me. I think im going to take it, as much as i dont want to sell I dont want a coin that will devalue over time due to that spot.

Now you sound like an astute collector.:)

What is the dot exactly? Is it toning of some kind? I remember reading something before but forget. Im really new to pennies, I mainly stick with dollars.

Could be anything, but a bit of spittle is a likely culprit.

Your one of the smarter ones. Us old farts here try to help and most of the time we just get ignored about are advice. But when I see some one spending good $$$ and know the out come I will try to steep in and help.

This next part is off topic a bit but you know us old guys like to tell stores...

Some will call it tough love that's what my Dad used to call it. He would tell us this is going to hurt me more then it's going to hurt you, Now I know that wasn't true but I deserved it.

I was in one of his Cadillac's he had 4 of them a white, pink, blue and gold this one was the 1959 pink Cadillac with the torpedo tail light that's what I used to call them. Well I took the cigarette lighter in it yes cars had cigarette lighters and I burnt nice circles all over the inside of it. I was 7 years old back then man that was dumb of me. I told him I was going to run away he told me to go I did not get very far I came back just before dark I was dumb but not crazy...

You have a good eye just keep in mind Copper, Nickel, Silver, Gold, Plat, and so on have different problems you just need to remember witch go's with what and you will be a Okay..... Have fun your on the right track.
