I went to a coin store in Palo Alto this morning and they had a box full of fully worn seated half dollars.
My guess is the best in the batch was a fr-2, there may have been some Po-1 in the box. They were slicks, but you could see dates (just barely) and if the mintmark was there, you could make out what it was (but just barely).

There were no rims, no stars around the rims, Miss Liberty was just a ghost.

I pulled 8 out of the box just for the heck of it to play with. Sometimes I'm still a little kid at heart.

They don't do anything special for the collection, but what the heck, they are really fun to look at.

So they found a new home.

Oh yeah, I also picked up a PCGS PROOF64 1873 (closed 3) shield nickel and a PCGS PROOF 64CAM 1888 3 cent nickel.

They are pretty cool too!

    Fun? I was in heaven. I think I liked the slicks better than the high grade coins, and I really love the high grade coins.

    There was a box of walkers and standing lib quarters that I almost went through too. I probably could have walked out of there with a load of really cool low end stuff.

    What would be really fun, would be to sit down and play a poker game with a bunch of slicks. Imagine playing with dimes, quarter, halves and dollars. The sound alone would be incredible. :)

    The older I get, the more I am drawn to the lower end stuff. I am evolving past the obsession with grade and am giving in to my obsession with history. Those worn coins changed hands HUNDREDS of times and may/may not have crossed the globe. There is something VERY appealing about the romance of worn coins. Besides, that "ting" that a silver coin makes when you drop it on a counter is priceless. You don't get the same sound from a slab ;)

    Yes they are pretty cool LanLord.
    I use to dabble in the CN 3 Cent series along with Shield nickels, but my true passion belongs to the mighty 2 Cent Piece for some strange reason.

    I just like copper and it's a short series, I just might be able to reach my goal before I pass. :#

    I always wonder when I see a badly worn coin from the 1800's, what was purchased with this coin? Who handled it, anyone famous? It's really history in your hands as an auctioneer friend of mine is fond of saying.

    I just won a very worn, likely a poor1, 76cc quarter.....I don't collect quarters, well at least I didn't before this one!

    You had a very good day at the coin shop.... I miss having a coin shop to visit.... used to be a great way to spend an hour or so, and usually come away with a treasure or three.... ;) Cheers, RickO
