What is going on with this Quarter

JcldJcld Posts: 449 ✭✭✭

I stumbled upon this while looking through a pile of Canadian silver coins. It almost looks like it was cast. What do you think would make a quarter look like this?

Looks like it was submerged in acid.

Does have a bit of a poorly cast look to it. Did you weigh it?

My guess is it was exposed to a lot of heat but not enough to melt it.

    Acid is my guess.

German Measles were rampant in 1957, I know I got them and looked just like this.

My first impression is acid... There is another possibility though... I have seen this exact effect when some metal was left in a high frequency ultrasonic cleaner for an extended period of time. Unlikely that happened here, but it really made me think of the time I saw the results of the cleaner issue... Cheers, RickO

I agree with the acid theory.

Thanks all, is there a test that can be done to see if it is at least 90% silver?

Drop it on a hard surface.

I like that theory the best. Thanks
