What grading service options or improvements would you like to see?

logger7logger7 Posts: 9,730 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was thinking about what I like and don't like about the grading services and what I would like to see in terms of improvements. I'd like to see faster conservation options, guarantee submissions, faster and less expensive grading options as well. But I realize these are real businesses with huge detail oriented submissions. Will we see improvements in the future? How about the other services, NGC, Anacs and ICG? What kind of investment capital would it take to see their offering better services, holders, and guarantee backing on certified coins? And I have not seen many businesses that really take advice practically.

They know how; they just have to want to do it. If it costs $20 to return the whole thing and $10 each to return it in 3 shipments they could charge split the difference and charge an extra $5 for their trouble and would be a win win. I expect that reprogramming the system and physically storing it aren't worth the effort.

Maybe the stock price of this company is a reflection of high grading fees in the face of an overall steep decline in coin values, a very unsatisfactory turn around time for most commonly used submission levels and a complete unwillingness to communicate directly with the average collector about things discussed in this thread?

    Just an observation.

I've heard that you can get this if you know where but don't ask me. Otherwise, time consuming for the big two.

There are classes given around the country. Otherwise, join the ANA and take the correspondence course they offer.

When I worked at the old "Green/Red Banknote" label PCI, whenever we crossed a coin graded by PCGS or NGC we added EX...with the grading service and slab number. Don't laugh! Some folks liked our holder better. LOL.

PS We also put the auction, date and lot number on the labels.

I would like to see recorded video of the entire process of a few coins. I would like to see the restoration/conservation process in detail. I would like to see the speed difference between a 50 dollar coin compared to a 5000 dollar coin. I would like to know about the coin grade input into the system we see and why there is the delay there is.

Two tier grading for cross overs and reconsiderations:
    1) determine whether it will cross and determine a minimum grade;
    2) Crack and regrade as raw to see if a higher grade is warranted that the graders are afraid to award in case of distortions/obstructions by the plastic.

This entire process is under each submitter's direct control. Every time I send in multiple same-tier submissions in the same shipment, I block print HOLD FOR SHIPPING INSTRUCTIONS.
I can check hourly daily to see when the last of a grouping has grades posted, then just email customer service to release and ship multiple submission #'s in one package.

Over 90% of the time it is due to a patch of hairlines that you will not see unless you hold the coin "just right" under a bright desk lamp in a dark room. That's why coins that look like 65's, 66's, and 67's are in 64 holders.

If an extra charge is needed to say so than make that happen. Not a full paragraph but one or two short sentences pointing out the major flaws that caused the grade given. "Patch of hairlines obv 3 o'clock in the field" "Rim ding 10 o'clock obv"

I am awful at grading, but the information "hairlines at 3 o'clock" is best used if people would stop submitting coins until they recognized hairlines at 3 o'clock sucks and makes the grade go down. If you need a paragraph or a statement about the whys, you probably shouldn't submit. I recently posted a 65, 66, and 67 of same date and MM and could only tell between the 65 and 67 the difference, but a sentence would not make me feel better. I am not skilled enough to argue about how much hairlines make the coin go down. Once you know it was the hairlines, the next sticking point becomes why did you knock it down three points for them

I was thinking about a coin that looks flawless under a 10X loop and it gets a 69 or 68. Not a coin that obviously is less than a 67 with cheek scuffs or bag damage.

I'd guess that most submitters aren't aware that you could do that and are/were expecting PCGS to be proactive in dealing with it; hence my post.

Thank you for the tip tho, kind sir.

    1. Numeric details grade.
    2. Employ net numeric grading more often for minor post mint issues.

Its a shame to see coins with the noose of a details grade that are just slightly below "original" standards lumped in with coins that have been badly abused.

Its controversial but I'm throwing it out there.

I would like to know "where" my coins are in the process; acceptance, in-processing, receiving, waiting on graders, shipping, whatever, etc... I cannot tell you how many times that I have discovered one of the errors (mainly mis-attribution) that could have been corrected before it left the facility. The bar code from each order has to be able to be tracked within the facility to ensure accountability.

Part of the price of certification is due to the guaranty that goes with the coin. I'd like to get a break for coins that don't meet a designated minimum grade and that therefore never get holdered or guaranteed as anything. Not a big deal for cheap coins, but it can be a major consideration for big ticket items.

How about tracking I can track a $8.95 package form the USPS from New York to So Cal steep by steep but cant track my $1000 coin in a grading business, If you call all they say is it's being process Ray Charles can see that. :(

this would make a sheet explaining the grade of the coin much easier to do as well...the whole process should be automated, especially for modern coins. those should be much easier to grade by computer.

Agree with the above, with this addition, if appropriate, a human notation as to the eye appeal.

@Kudbegud....Eye appeal is, of course, a matter of opinion. This again opens grading to subjectivity. Of course, color can be measured...but the array and appeal cannot. Therefore, I would remove 'eye appeal' from the grade and let the market judge that criteria. Cheers, RickO
