Can you imagine what their fingers looked like?

I'm referring to those whose job it was to "adjust" silver HALF DIMES! :o

They did it as I was just looking at an image of a Flowing Hair Half Dime with file marks all over it.
They must have filed their fingers to the bone.

or dropped a lot of coins.
Tweezers maybe?

    Rubber gloves, I would think.

Edited to "leather gloves". Rubber gloves weren't invented until the 1880s, which is a bit late.

    Maybe leather...

Natural rubber is pretty old, although I'm not sure when it was first used for gloves. Blacksmith's used leather, I believe, through most of the 19th century. So maybe leather.

Internet says that rubber gloves were invented in the 1880s, so I'll amend to "leather gloves" :)

Likely silk or cotton gloves.... if gloves were used at all.... probably no gloves at all.... Cheers, RickO

"Work your fingers to the bone" seems to be a fitting cliché'.

I can imagine. I’ve gotten nearly all of my callouses handling metal that wasn’t precious, in several trades over the years.
