    Was there a dirty diaper nearby? Chances are this could be the very scarce WM-002 variety (Walmart 002). You could go find another one and call someone who cares from a payphone, another very scarce commodity.

    Your coin was made with what is called a "Rough Edge Die". The black areas on the rim confirm it. When a die is retired and thrown away, and Mint employees are in a big hurry to keep making more pennies or whatever, they will routinely go to the trash and retrieve it to keep stamping operations moving.

    "Rough Edge Dies" always come with scrapes on the high points, so they are very easy to identify. This happens when a Mint employee tries to deface the die and simply gives up, throwing it into the waste paper basket.

    It is then retrieved in an emergency for further use, if necessary, in a pinch. ;)
