I made this using MS Word and I am an novice picture taker, but I like it.

A bit dark, can you lighten the image?

I agree just lighten it a touch and you'll have yourself great pictures

Keeping in mind I'm not really a guy with an "artistic mind".....

I think there's a lot of photo real estate, (left, right, bottom), that should allow you to have a bigger picture of the coin!

I think your image ( the op's image) is pretty good. It looks like it shows the surfaces well. Robec may read the post and offer some input he is a wealth of quality information on imaging. I tend to agree the image should be cropped closer in as well.

If I didn't know better, I might think the coin was copper. If you're increasing the brightness and contrast in MS Word, see if you can also decrease the saturation, although I don't know if that is possible.

These are seldom perfectly flat in the holder, and being struck on a roller press might also be coming into play here as far as flatness of the coin. Since there are no portraits, you're pretty free to light the coin from whatever angle gives you the most advantageous reflection off the coin into the camera. Not doing this might be why the tree side is poorly lit.

    Do these look less flat?

MSWord offers only primitive image controls. It's OK for a final lighten/darken before printing, but that's about all. Cheap but good photo modification programs, such as Correl Paint Shop Pro, can help you get your image into final form before you put them into MSWord (or anything else). In my opinion the free stuff all has gaps and shortcuts that reduce quality and flexibility.

Also, check your initial photo resolution/ compression (if any) and color balance.
