I don't think a collector owns it. It's a dealer looking for a sucker. This coin was beaten to death last time it came up. I don't see why hunting season is closed on it. Cut behind the head bothers me for the grade.

As opposed to a private collector looking for a sucker?
You are right, it could be a collector, I have no idea other than someone with enough juice to get that POS in a 66+ holder. I'm not disparaging a person, just a disagreement about whether that coin is properly graded by PCGS or not. I already said "not a 66+" the last time it came up for sale.
It wouldnt have been granted a plus on a crossover, would it? You think someone had the coconuts to crack a 66 that looked like this, hoping for an upgrade?

I am trashing the grade given to this coin and
I am trashing the reserve amount for this coin
If this coin was graded 65+ or even perhaps 66 and reserved for $ 50,000.....
Screwing an unsuspected buyer is not to be condoned.
Is there any difference in selling a grossly overgraded coin
Or selling a doctored coin ?
No matter what is discussed here, this is the finest PCGS graded coin. No matter what your opinions are, that fact can not be changed or challenge, correct?
Has this coin been to CAC? If not, why not? Just wondering.

For those that don't know the pcgs pop in ms66rd had been 3/0 for many many years (at least 10 or more). Stewart owned two and Gerry owned one (Thomas Irwin collection). Photos of all 3 might still be on coingallery.org. I think most Lincoln collectors would consider those 3 the 3 finest known.
The subject of this thread was at that time in an ngc ms66 holder, last selling with Heritage in 1/16 for $27K. The question I ponder is how many times in the 2004-2015 era had it been tried unsuccessfully for crossover.
This is the question. The coin has been around with a general consensus that it was overgraded in the NGC holder. It's been on the block a half dozen times or more in the last 10 years. It's nothing new.

Honestly who really cares if this is the finest PCGS graded coin? IMO, as Stewart says, not trashing the coin but rather what seems to be the overgrading of this specimen. God help the eventual buyer (if there is one) at this price.

Careful, you are calling into question the whole nature of registry sets.

point blank stewart is trashing the coin. because the coin does not meet his particular self serving standards. that does not mean it is over graded.
Even if you drop the +, at the reserve price it was fair.
I can say that Legend made the decision to sell the coin for what it believes is a fair and proper reserve. Obviously so far at least one person agrees. One thing Legend does NOT do is rip people off by selling bad value coins. Legend certainly does NOT intentionally sell doctored coins either. Stewart is barking up a very bad and wrong tree here.

Yes, but gradeflation exists and registry sets create the demand for all the new top pops being created. No one with a registry set mindset would pay more money for a prettier 65 than they will pay for an ugly top pop 66. Sad but true.

Looking at it in the NGC 66 plastic I have to wonder how far it is from RB?
Not the best picture to look at. I've never seen the coin in hand, BUT the white insert in the NGC holder will tend to cause the camera white balance to make the coin look darker.
Give Steward credit though. He has always been vocal about coins he does not like (does not matter if he is right or wrong). I wish more people would be.
The grading services would be no where with out collectors. When collectors sense gradeflation or problems, the services need to listen. Sadly too many people do not speak out (in a general way).
FWIW, I've seen Heritage report coins unsold when the buyer does not pay. I've also seen them do it when they believe that it's a fake sale, meaning that the buyer was bidding on behalf of the seller for the purpose of establishing an inflated auction record. I have no idea what the story is with this particular coin, and I'm no expert on the Lincoln Cent market, but I would take the earlier 150K price realized with a grain of salt.

I agree with the sentiment. On the other hand, I'm not so sure that the TPGs can accomplish much by listening. (Sounds ridiculous, but think about it.) FWIW, when I hear you and STEWARTBLAY talking about gradeflation, and when I look at the prices paid for Registry trophy coins, my reaction is to collect other things. 150K for a 14-D? What would a complete set of Lincolns cost in 66RB? Seriously. Do the math.

Based upon his history, he has no credibility. IF he had never bashed a coin here that he wanted to buy to drive its price down, THEN he could open his mouth
TradeDollar Nut - For you to say I have no credibility is totally BS ! Perhaps you are still
Upset about the damaged 1804 dollar you bought ?
IMO Legend has a lot of credibility in procuring gem coins for clients and for auction. We both know not to be shy and reserved when a coin gets us excited. We also have had shots taken at us because we pay more than most dealers and collectors for the best
I can humbly say I do know Lincoln cents and I do not want to own this 1914 D in its present
holder.

Well, you know your stuff. And you USED to have credibility here. And then you trashed a coin here and bought it out of auction and said ‘all’s fair’. So now NO ONE can know what your motivation or true opinion of a coin is anymore.
You could hate this coin in its current holder ...or you could secretly love this coin, plan to buy it and are just talking the price down. The fact is that we don’t have any way to know which - and that’s why you have NO credibility here any more.
@STEWARTBLAYNUMIS what is the right grade for this coin? The grade it would sticker at in your opinion?
