Lets discuss this type of toning!!! please!

davids5104davids5104 Posts: 805 ✭✭✭✭

I think the reverse of this coin is pretty. But I seem to remember, perhaps incorrectly, that artificially toned coins can be colored by doing something to the cases to allow something to alter the coin. Am I mistaken? The symmetry makes me nervous for some reason. I am ok with bullseye toning with symmetry, but this type I am not sure how to have it created naturally... Thanks for the insight folks.... I have got to be the incorrect one though as PCGS and CAC believe in its quality. Walk me through my crazy!!!

BTW, I am also NOT saying this particular coin is AT, just that the pointed portions of the toning have me wondering how it was made

Looks like sulfur toning. You could do it artificially with hydrogen sulfide gas. But it also happens naturally from high sulfur paper, either in an old roll or an old album.

I remember March of Dimes holders that would leave that type of toning.

I remember when I was in grade school during the March of Dimes drives. You gave a dime and they gave you a little plastic crutch to clip to your shirt pocket.

    BTW - I like it.

    Cheers

I'll guess oddly folded bank roll with another roll pressing against it in a bag or tray.

    I like it. Totally original.

Thank you guys for looking at this coin. I am only skilled enough to identify the most egregious of AT, so the pattern of the toning was interesting to me. I had only seen this pattern in the forms of AT I am capable of identifying.

Look OK to me. And it's rather attractive!

    I agree tab toning.

Remember the banks used to give out cards to fill with dimes or quarters. When you filled a card you were supposed to go back to the bank and deposit it in your savings account.

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

I've seen that sort of toning on MANY Mercurys. IMO it can be quite attractive. While I don't per se know what it is, I would agree with the comments that it is most likely tab toning.

...A Proud American bought a cocktail with it right after we won WWII and the swizzle stick got left ontop the coin and forgot about...bar closed down and the entire building was left vacant for 60 years...Voilà ;)

Weird tarnish patterns do occur in albums or other collector storage methods. Often we see coins that have had tape on them. Certainly that is a strange pattern and approaching black on both edges. I would not even hazard a guess on how it occurred. Cheers, RickO

I vote with those that think this coin is NT. It has obviously been in contact with a substance that caused the toning, but the toning was not created intentionally.

100% NT. I remember when a major group of coins like this went through NGC many years ago. They came from bank cards. Numerous 68s were made, some strikingly toned. I bought one of I think two that graded 69. Most were not FB.
