54 and entering my 49th year in the hobby.

The results are exactly as I expected...a big old middle finger for the middle category.
I hit the big 7-0. Not all bad. I get the good parking spots and at my club I get to tee off from the front tees.

I'm 54 and a little older than the average according to the chart up above, but young at heart. I collected ball cards as most kids did in the 1970's, but stopped by 1976 as I started working (at age 12) the summers, school vacations and most days after school. I worked for a guy that owned many properties that always needed repair after the tenants moved out. He paid me $3.00/hour (a lot of money in 1976 and more money than my mother made) to do demolition at first and eventually to repair stuff as I got older. I learned a little bit about most of the trades (carpentry, plumbing & electrical) that allows me to do many home repairs that most people call a professional to do. I never really had a summer vacation as most kids did and school vacations just allowed me more time to work. I missed not having a childhood, but I had to work as my parents were struggling to make ends meet just after we bought our first home so I did what I could to help. I got married in 1986 and started back up collecting (first with coins in 1987), just one year after PCGS got started. This started purely by accident as my wife was a bank teller and one day she brought home some old quarters that someone cashed in. We had a daughter in 1988, best thing to happen in my life right along with getting married. In 1993 I stopped coins as I lost interest and started collecting Nolan Ryan cards around the time he retired. I've collected Nolan Ryan non-stop for 25 years and last year I started coin collecting again and plan on doing both hobbies until my demise to make up for the childhood I didn't have.

Thanx Donato - that was a really poignant personal post - I truly get it.
I had to work also or no school clothes in high school - I worked to help renovate basements - also had time to learn to play drums and get into a band with a very old used drum set while my contemporaries were sporting sparkling new Ludwig sets.
I have absolutely no regrets - I only remember the good things - and collecting - now - only supports that sentiment.
This has been interesting.

I just turned 49. Can't say I absolutely had to work in high school, but I did starting at 15 as it seemed the right thing to do to take the pressure off my parents. We were a typical blue collar, rust belt family treading water, but thankfully not sinking. I also wouldn't trade it for anything - good times actually. That's not why I stopped collecting, though. Fishing and other outdoor activities drew me away from cards until I returned for a short time in 1993-4, and then I stopped again. I've come back for good collecting since October 2006.
I'll pass on the goodie bag, lol.
Just turned 39. Card collecting has been such a fun journey through my 30’s.
55 and happy my mom never threw my collection out. She always knew how important it was to me. 44 years of collecting and counting.

I just turned 61 - I remember opening packs of cards in 1969. I purchased baseball and football cards at the local Ben Franklin store for 5 cents a pack. Those were all thrown out and I didn't start collecting again until about 1983. Why 1983? I really liked the 1983 Topps Sandberg rookie card. I picked up a card here and there but had no plan and was selling the cards too. My favorites are Ernie Banks, Ron Santo, Billy Williams, Ryne Sandberg, Gale Sayers, Dick Butkus, Mike Ditka, Walter Payton, Bart Starr and Johnny Unitas. I've missed so many opportunities that I couldn't list them all here but I did keep a few nice cards along the way. I wish I would have put more Michael Jordan cards away. I just have his 2nd and 3rd year cards.
Same exact age and same time starting the hobby, but unfortunately I left around 1999 and came back in in 2007.
Well, considering the majority of the members here are in the 40-49 age group, it looks like the hobby should be around for at least another 20 years.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
47 here. And with age I have finally come to appreciate well used cards and get so much more enjoyment out of them than chasing the Graded high dollar cards.
I'm 51, started as a 10 year old opening 1977 baseball wax packs, as that was the only thing available in my town, never saw a cello or a rack. Then turned 13 and got an electric guitar and still play in a classic rock band and quit collecting in 1979. Had kids and they wanted baseball cards and it restoked my fire for collecting. Now I am one of the OLD vets on the board. I don't post much anymore but am always lurking for something I might think I have to see in my collection. Definitely a lot of good people on here
