Plenty of rock from the 70's is painful on the ears. Boston, Journey, Steve Miller. 60's music was of a higher caliber.
To disregard music of the forties and fifties as it was your father's music is short sighted. Not every song was a gem certainly, but at least a basic talent and exaction was necessary to make it into the studio. Listen to Nat Cole or Sarah Vaughan and you will begin to understand.

Of course, there were talented people in the 40's and 50's and yes some head banging music of the seventies and eighties was awful.
But on the whole, the music of the 40's and 50's is unlistenable, horrendously awful, mind-numbing blah. I do not see any of this generation listening to that sound. They dig rock and roll tho.
