Congrats on 3000 posts. I like your avatar, I lived in Gretna for two years, 1969 - 1971 and gained 30 pounds on oysters and Dixie beer consumed in or around Jackson Square.

Here's a pic of my 1842-O half eagle that came out of the building not far from Jackson Square. Bought it in a Stack's auction in 1986 where it was described as follows "small date, small letters (only) Very Fine and scarce" and now in a PCGS VF35 holder.....

Neat C/S's! I have a large nut cracker (WW-I ?) with a similar stamping. There is a Naval College in Newport, RI - that explains the quarter. Did you have these done?

I had them done - by me!

A couple years ago a few vintage USN punches showed up on eBay. I was horrified at the prospect of them falling into the hands of someone who might abuse them and create some fake counterstamps, on WWII era coins, for example. I had to pay a bit for them but at least I got them "off the street". They are not the only punches of this type that exist, of course, but at least the ones I bought are safely accounted for.

I have been using them to make very limited numbers of counterstamped coins on modern issues which have some kind of tie to the USN. You accurately guessed the RI quarter connection (historically a big Navy presence in Newport). As for the Churchill crown, there is in fact a USS Winston S. Churchill in the US Navy, so I made up ten of those counterstamped coins just for the fun of it. I sent four of them to the commander of that ship, and @ricko has one docked in his collection. Incidentally, all that I create are marked on the opposite side with my tiny JBK initials stamp so as to document the origin.

BTW - I have never seen these counterstamps on anything but coins, but they of course were not made for that purpose. I assumed they were used in Navy machine shops in some capacity. I would love to see that nut cracker - I wonder if they were also used by private manufacturers to mark all manner of products produced under contract for the USN.

@Insider2 ...I did not stamp those coins...they were given to me by @JBK ...I am former Navy and spent the large part of my Naval time on a ship out of Newport, RI.....Cheers, RickO

Are you a Shellback? My Cousin Joe was assigned to the USS Cascade (a Destroyer Tender) back in the 1950's.

    He never made it.

Congrats on the 3000th post! This picture was taken on one of the three sisters bridges in Pittsburg. I took it because I remember Andy Skrabalak of Angel Dees telling me about his extensive Clemente memorabilia collection.
