    That looks like solder on the reverse where a pin was attached.

    Not solder..its incuse and some sort of punch. Oval and textured.
    Obviously damaged captain, all the coins I collect are :)

    It looks like an ovoid punch was used 6-7 times on the rev, to what purpose? Neat little mystery.

    The punches area (assuming it was not routed out) was done before the obverse was planed off. Where is the punch in relation to the orientation of the engraving? If centered at the top then maybe someone was creating a base or receptacle where a pin could be soldered.

    Looks like someone tried to scratch off Gennie. Poor girl.

    BTW, due to the weird spelling I'm guessing it was short for Genevieve, but who knows.

    Yep... looks like the relationship soured prior to completion of what likely was to be a pin when the attachment was made... Oh well, win some, lose some...the rest just peter out....and some will remain friends.. peter out or peter in..... :D:D:D Cheers, RickO
