Help needed to identify possible DDO 1941-D Mercury Dime

toyz4geotoyz4geo Posts: 1,506 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hey all,
So I downloaded my trueviews from my recent crossover submission to my phone. Per usual, I expanded the pictures to examine any details these tired old eyes of mine may have missed. As i looked at the '41-D Merc, it appeared to have doubling on both the obverse and reverse. I checked the Cherrypicker's Guide but it didn't have any detailed pictures. Any help to identify this is greatly appreciated. BTW, this graded as an MS67FT.

From the images provided, I am seeing mechanical doubling and not die doubling.

I think it is mechanical doubling, too.

Does there seem to be the split serif thing on the 2nd picture, the L in Liberty? On the horizontal part.

Sometimes mechanical doubling can be slight enough as to appear to be dd as a split serif.

The kind of doubling in your photo is caused by vibrating dies.

Here's a merc dime ddo. Notice the fat bottom of the 3, scraggly split edge of 2nd 9, and a 1 over the old 1 but not perfect. The 1st nine is engraved from the bottom up through the loop and terminates where they meet. You can see the ghost-ish > in the first 9 that wasn't done again, where it sits lower on the coin than the rest of the prominent 9.

The digits don't all flow east or west or counter/clockwise.

Not doubled die in my opinion. " Mechanical, machine, and shelf".... are the common terms I learned, over the years, for this type of doubling.

Agreed. What does the Mintmark look like? Is it showing any doubling?

If it also is showing doubling, that would be the clue to MDD, as Mintmarks in 1941 were applied after the die was manufactured.

Oh well. I was hoping I was on to something there.
    Still, it is an MS67FB.
