Foreign and Unusual GTG, "Grade In"

As an offshoot of US colonial coins and being French Canadian ( French was my first language) I started collecting coins from France that could have circulated in the New World.
One nice feature is the series of the Ancien Regime or French Royals can be defined by the rule of the House of Borbon which spanned 1572-1792 ending with the French Revolution. Being the power house of the time many coins were made and many survive in high grade. Unusual features were many coins struck over earlier issues (many times the date of the earlier coin still shows), horrible metal stock, and poor quality from one mint to another.

Coin I won a within the last year and graded by NGC. I'll post the grade later today

    62 even though I am not ruling out a 63

    You guys are good.

    I'm surprised how many saw it as a MS coin. I expected to see a predominance of AU grades

    Heritage's description;

    Louis XIV Ecu (6 Livres) 1695(9) MS63 NGC, Rennes mint, Gad-217, DAV-3813. This coin was struck over another coin and there are some haymarks on the obverse. There are trace adjustment marks that can be seen in the Fluer-de-Lis and on the obverse under the bust. Very lustrous for the type and great surfaces with light champagne tone. This is the only example recorded by NGC to date and the finest.

    I'm late to the party. Beautiful piece; however, the coin is a technical AU. Look at the change of color on the hair and even the cheek. NOT ONE BIT of original surface remains on the high point!

    Perhaps most graded it MS because it was in a slab as a GTG. Everyone knows that coins with that amount of friction are now usually graded Mint State "something" (usually 62). The reverse is "Unc enough" and the pleasing overall eye appeal got you a "commercial" MS-63. As I wrote, a beautiful coin.

    @BIGAL2749.... Great old coin and in remarkable condition for it's age... I would have guessed 60.... Cheers, RickO

    I see some color change on the NGC slab and was just wondering why NGC would give you a AU plastic slab for your Mint State coin?

    Really like this coin.
