1937-d 3-leg buffalo 5 cent newp......

A recent pick-up.
I'll eventually send it in for grading, but I can't tell an EF from an AU58 with these.
Your opinions of grade would be appreciated.

Nice pick up. Definitely genuine. I grade these by the space between the hip and the tail.
I think AU-55
Pete
I think au53.

Very nice piece, regardless of what it ends up grading.
AU55 seems right but if it has really nice luster I could even see 58.
AU58 IMO.
55
Nice pickup!

Such a classic! The buffalo nickel looks best to be in circulated condition. I love crusty Vfs
Nice, I like it
BHNC #203
nice coin indeed. ill go au53/55
Solid AU+, and as another poster stated, definitely genuine.
If you cant tell EF from 58, how did you decide what you should pay for it? I guess that means you paid EF or less...
If so, BIG score!
Real good looking coin. Looks AU.
Well, sort of......I kind of thought it was an AU, but I wasn't positive.
Purchase price $900 Canadian which is approx. $720 USD.

Very nice buff and a great price.
Beautiful coin! AU-55-58. Get the spots off by professional conservation when you send it in.
Nice score!
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
I'm not excited about the spots on the obverse but think it will grade AU-something. I think you got a good deal.
it's crackers to slip a rozzer the dropsy in snide
au 55 ish
If you could get that light corrosion and spotting off, it might grade a bit better. 55 is a market grade, technically a little better.
Nice coin. AU53 PCGS/AU55 NGC. A little too much wear and ticks for anything higher.

Nice to see that you found this one raw in the wild.
When you send it in I myself would specify for it to be holdered Reverse showing.
Nice Pick-Up
Yes, definitely.

Whatever the grade I think you got a good deal.
AU58-62
I like the variety, just not a raw coin of this (potential) value.

Low of 45 to high of 53
I would go with AU55.... Picture might say 53, but they look better in hand.... Nice price too.. Cheers, RickO
We're coin opposites I guess.
Most of my purchases are raw and between $100 to $1500

Graded NGC AU55.
If anyone is interested in purchasing it, send me an offer.

I like it.

I still think it would probably get a 53 from PCGS. I just compared it to an AU-50 (PCGS) that I have and yours did look just a tad better. But the eyes of NGC are probably better than mine .
Too bad the rear leg is pitted otherwise high grade and problem free.
" and I quote" Too bad the rear leg is pitted otherwise high grade and problem free"
is this guy for real
I won't grade a coin MS-65 with black spots. Too bad you didn't have it conserved as those look like they would come right off along with the brown toning. Still a really nice purchase.
That is one of the diagnostics for the variety. Look it up and learn something.
Not to bicker with you (pun intended) but the missing leg is the diagnostic.
Congrats on a straight grade.

I just started with the 4 legged bison..and see the 3 legged one is also a must
This would be a fun hunt for many years to come. Congrats on your rare find

The rear leg will always look like that on a 3-Legger. The coin was seriously reworked to oblivion.
It actually is one of the pick up points for the coin.
Pete
I grade it a solid $850 USD

Not to bicker with you (educational help intended!) but the missing leg is not THE DIAGNOSTIC for these coins.
How would YOU make a 3-legged buffalo nickel using a 4-legged normal coin?
Now, why don't you take my advice and look up the diagnostics for these coins. I can think of SIX without looking for the missing leg. When you get up to speed, you'll be able to pick these out WITHOUT looking at the reverse. If you do what I suggested, please return to this thread and tell us what you have learned.
Methinks I should let this go, Skip. The diagnostics are apparent to those "in the know". The real variable is when the die took on its' last look.
What did the obverse die look like before the final rework?
Were any of the diagnostic elements in place already from the first abaraiding?
I thought you posted a pic of a pre-3Leg Buff obverse. I may be wrong. I'm marked like that sometimes.
What's my first name?
Pete
We certified a very scarce 3 1/2 leg 1937-D buffalo with all the diagnostics of a 3 leg. I had never seen one before.
