I have a half dollar. I'm not really sure if it's worth anything. I wanted to be sure.

    If it is solid 24K gold it is worth at least $400.00 dollars. Don't cut into it. Have someone like a professional dealer look at it. Might be worth a flight to the nearest big coin show.

    I'm fairly certain that you can walk into
    any coin shop, or coin show, and buy
    a gold-plated Kennedy half for $1 at the
    most, and in all probability, face value
    if the dealer has one.

    No, because to salvage the gold you would likely destroy the coin. Too much heat.

    Interesting. But now that the Mint has reinstituted their scrap coin redemption program, maybe a little more can be reclaimed...

    I did see a segment on the RCM and their process to refine gold. It involved submerging the raw or alloyed gold in a solution and using various electrical charges to get the pure gold molecules to migrate to a plate of some kind. Then they broke the gold off the plate in pieces (it was very brittle at that point) and what they had was pure gold. All the OP needs to do to get the full value is to build a set-up like that. How hard could it be? :D

    I can do that with a grapefruit, a 9 volt battery, bobby pins and a copper cent (pre 82 zincolon) I once owned a gold plated Kennedy half dollar, I sold it on eBay for $3 plus shipping, but that was the old eBay when it was one giant garage sale.
