Have had this half dollar for 25+/- years in a flip in my safe. It doesn't fit my theme any more so I'm wanting to move it along on the BST, but am not a grading expert on this series. I've tried to use Photograde but the images there are somewhat conflicting between F-VF as far as level of detail, especially on the reverse. I really don't want to spend time/$ on a PCGS submission unless it is warranted. So, what do you think? F-12? F-15? VF-20? Or (?) Thanks in advance! (Please excuse the pics, they were shot with an iPhone and a desk lamp, it's the best I have)

I would say F-15...if it straight grades. The centers appear too bright...or maybe it's your imaging set-up...white balance is off?

    1820/19 50C Curl Base 2 ...nice variety!

Thanks for your input oih82w8! These pics were shot with a desk lamp and an iPhone...LOL Not very good quality, I know. The coin is actually a really nice even gray in hand.

    I'd say F-12 to F-15.
    Nice coin

Uneven toning but could be worth $200 if it is a common variety. Overdates are very popular.

Fine. The centers of the photos appear to be overexposed.

Nice coin and nice variety. I'm just getting into capped busts and I've been doing some reading.

Some things to consider when figuring out a grade, is the clasp that holds her gown together. But she has nice drapery, a solid liberty, her profile is nice, but you're losing very many curls.. some curls present out onto her forehead are a plus but not all there.

On the reverse the first thing would be the dentils of which 75% are missing or damaged. Since everyone always touches the center of a coin, you want nice defined lines on the shield. Yours look nice for the rim. The eagle's face is defined.

I noticed the next thing that goes is the banner, starting with E, end of UNUM, as Pluribus wears with the eagle. You want the feathers and inside feathers well defined. Just like liberty's curls, the center right took wear. The talons and claws with arrows and branch are very nice but the branch not so much. The toning makes up for a lot of design wear. The shield has a few hits, and is no longer "full steps" like a nickel or FB on a mercury dime.. just a lot, lot, lot finer.

The worst on the reverse is when the feather end wears off into the eagle. These are at least still there though. That hit to the left of the 5 and the rim damage lettering (only 1 though good) at the O in OF. If the lettering were closer to the rim this coin would be shot but it's still nice.

The eagle's nose and beak and tongue are in nice shape. I can forgive feathers if I can see a nice eagle.

On the front, too, hair curls from her headband are out and defined. I can't tell if the stars going into the rim because of the strike. There's that "gouge", but nice detail with her headscarf out. The bust's.. bust.. is important too.

I think I've got this right and it'd be F12. I'd say 15 if not for the rim. Vf20 if she had more hair curls like at her collarbone and at least a circle for her clasp.

That's my best guess and understanding of how to grade these. The toning will help this coin.

That is a nice old coin and an overdate to boot..... I would keep it as is and self slab. Cheers, RickO

I grade it about 175 bucks.

Note: In order to avoid the forum police--this is NOT an offer.

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

A bit worse for the wear, but I love when they get the blue halo toning. Taken with bad yellow light.

    My first thought was F15.
