About what I would have expected for a Mint medal, especially in that price range. I don't expect it to improve much. I wonder how long they'll keep selling them.
Backroad if they would of made the medals then I would of kept them but since they did not seems like their shooting themself's in the foot by backordering all the special medals. I already bought the PCGS 70 grades on their WW1 medals they did make there going to arrive any day now. I am more of a when I buy I want to see the order shipped in a few days type of guy. Heck I might NOT be around by May. Every day is special to me.
But I will be there to buy on tomorrows sale! I am sure they wont be back order on those.

Have you gotten shipping notice yet? I think none of the medals have made it that far yet. Sill in process of pressing inventory to actual individual orders. I ordered in the first minute and my order says "Backordered" as I suspect all the orders show. Max of 100,000 over all 5 remember. They won't make 20,000 of each and have to make more of some and destroy some. The mint has indecipherable thinking most of the time but they won't make more of any one medal than needed just to destroy them.
The medals may be good to buy if mint issues can be avoided.
FYI - medals are treated like a lower life form and generally come dinged up fresh from the mint
The medals coming out of the mint of late have been of exceptional quality, especially those done in silver. I know the old 1 5/8" bronzes sometimes came dinged up (I have a blank planchet that shows why), but the 3" bronze pucks I've bought of late have been perfect.
However, considering they're coming from all four mints, some may be better than others...

WWI Silver Medal Order Deadline on Tuesday, Feb. 20; WWI Silver Dollar Intro Prices End
by MIKE UNSER on FEBRUARY 19, 2018 · 0 COMMENTS
Less than 30 hours remain to order any of the five 2018 World War I Centennial Silver Medals.
Released in mid-January alongside WWI Silver Dollars, their sales deadline is 3:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Feb. 20. The United States Mint will not accept any new orders beyond that time. The companion silver dollars will remain on sale although at slightly higher prices.
Medals Available in Sets
The silver medals honor branches of the U.S. Armed Forces that were active in the First World War with designs emblematic of the Army, the Navy, the Air Service, the Marines and the Coast Guard.
They were conceived by the U.S. Mint to support the WWI Centennial Silver Dollar Commemorative Coin Program. Each medal is paired with a proof silver dollar and sold as a distinct set. Collectors wanting all five medals need to buy the five sets, which boosts silver dollar totals. Surcharges of $10 are collected on the sale of each coin with proceeds, after associated costs, paid to the United States Foundation for the Commemoration of the World Wars to assist the World War I Centennial Commission in memorializing the centenary of the war.
WWI Silver Dollar Price Hikes
The proof and uncirculated silver dollars are currently sold at respective introductory pricing of $51.95 and $48.95. Their regular prices are $5 higher, with that pricing also kicking in at 3:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Feb. 20.
Following the medal sales deadline, the U.S. Mint will have a handle on how many to make. The agency said it will begin fulfilling medal orders in late May.
Medal sales (as well as the $5 early discount on the coins) end at 3pm today! Unfortunately, we probably won't know the sales of the medal sets through Sunday until after the deadline...
Last chance to buy them at retail!
I just have this feeling if the Mint sold them (both coins and 5 medals) as a set in a fancy presentation box, the medal sales would have been much better. Who (except the most...ummm...dedicated) would buy all five medals only to be stuck with 4 extra proof coins which will invariably lose their value?
(If I was truly evil, I'd be suggesting everyone order the medal sets, then cancel them in two weeks after they've started striking the medals, with the reason for cancelling being the unwanted proof coins...)

I was wondering if they were going to go unavailable or sold out. It turns out the coin and medal sets got poofed from the online catalog. Like they were never for sale.
I've always been a bit confused about these Medals. The Mint reserves the right to strike Medals in any quantity at any time they choose, correct? Were they only limiting the Medal/Coin Sets this time around? Couldn't they do another run in another size or metal if they wanted to ?

Yes.
Were they only limiting the Medal/Coin Sets this time around? Couldn't they do another run in another size or metal if they wanted to ?
They could, but they probably won't. These medals were specifically tied to WWI and dated 2018.
There are plans to strike generic, proof silver medals (on ASE planchets) for all the different service branches. "Generic" meaning they will not be tied to any anniversary or date. The Mint specifically said these will be part of the permanent medal offerings. (That probably means in the product catalog and at the stores.)
And also in our lucky future, they are also planning on releasing the presidential medals in proof on ASE planchets. So they will be striking more T.R., Hoover, Ike, etc. medals, but this time in proof, so it will keep the uncirc finish medals the C&C sets unique.
First up (this year) will be Washington and Adams, then four per year until all the prezzes get their medal. All of these new silver medals will become part of the permanent catalog. I am hoping for a reasonable price on these. If they keep it around $35, I may bite. (I have the full 1 5/8" bronze prez set, but that was pretty cheap to put together.)
I should probably create a thread with that info, since the medals are supposed to start appearing this year.

Not exactly this time. Max mintage was set at 100,000 across all 5 medals. So it could have worked out like this: Medal # 1 - 40,000 orders #2 - 25,000 #3 - 20,000 #4 - 10,000 #5 - 5,000.
The order period for the medals was for one month. What ever each medal orders were made determines how many they mint. Not to exceed 100,000 total across all 5 medals. The medals are no not available to order and they will stat the presses to fulfill the orders.

There wasn't a mintage limit. There was a product limit.
Now, I agree the WWI medals are a one-off, but the mint can re-strike any medal it wants to. The medals aren't regulated by law.

The product, being the coin and medal set, equals the mintage and has a limit of 100,000 across all 5 sets. Quotes below are from Coin World.
_These sets will be available from Noon, Jan 17 to 3pm Feb 2, 2017. Coin World has reported that there will be a combined total of 100,000 medals across the five options. _
The silver dollar will be limited to a maximum mintage of 350,000 pieces across all options. Of that total, a maximum of 100,000 of the dollars will be reserved for the coin and medal sets across all five designs.
The maximum number of sets combined is 100,000. Sales of the sets at $99.95 each will run through 3 p.m. ET Feb. 20, unless sufficient orders are received before then to exhaust the maximum of 100,000 sets.
So there will be no more made of the medals than are required to fulfill orders through today at 3:00 PM. No re-strikes, no single medal sales or surprise 5 medal sets. Unless the mint is flat out lying which always could be a possibility. It is unfortunate that the mint choose this method of sales,
Sorry Gluggo, sales of the sets with the medals ceased at 3 PM EST today. Rather than leaving the listings there as place holders saying sales have ended they just deleted the whole listing.
Ok my nose was starting to grow;
I returned 2 full sets it was about $1000.00 worth.
Last minute late at night the day before I bought 2 Coast Guard's so thats what I have coming late when ever later this year.
@Kkathyl said:
sales have been pretty much evenly divided by the services. All around 10-15% with exception to the Coast Guard
Row Labels Sum of Adj. Net Demand Sum of %

2018 WWI CENTENNIAL COIN & MEDAL - ARMY 15161 13%

2018 WWI CENTENNIAL COIN & MEDAL - COAST GRD 9565 8%
Grand Total 112832 100%
Adding in the medals distorts the numbers for the services. If you look at just the service medals, there is quite a gap between the Army and the others. There are 25% more Army medals sold than Navy, Air Force or Marines medals (3000/12000) and 50% more than the Coast Guard.
The medal percentage of the maximum 100,000 across all 5 is easy to see
Army 15.1%
Marines 12.3&
Air Service 12.1%
Navy 11.8%
Coast Guard 9.5%
The Proof and Uncirculated Dollars will continue to be offered but with out the early ordering $5 discount. The sales numbers so far shown will need some clarification. I believe the sales reported is for single Proof coins and does not included Proofs in the sets. Total medals sold, which would include a Proof Dollar = 60,994 Total Proofs by them selves = 36,730 Total Proofs sold so far = 97,724

And some cold feet, but can't understand how the Air Medals jumped by 251, unless the number was misreported, which, considering the other medal sales by 2/21, may have been the case...
It will be interesting to watch the attrition rate... while people change their minds and cancel orders since it will be awhile before they start shipping. Wonder if the new Mint policy of cracking down on returns will also affect these to some degree.

Looks like it will be safe to say the Coast Guard medal will be the limiting factor for the total possible sets....
I'll bet this Medal Issue is the cause of the recent change in Mint Returns Policy.
Also the year end last chance events where there's a chance to get in on a new low . Take a gamble, well it's a real gamble now. No more ordering 500 Pink Gold Breast Coins, then returning 400 to slip under a new record.

How about a Special 5 Medal Christmas Set in a Chinese Cherry Wood Box with FREE SHIPPING ? Could we get that?
Oh please hold me back from that one. There needs to be an HHL of 1 on that .
It is unfortunate that the mint choose this method of sales,
Hey what the heck I was going to buy some of these WW1 medals and they are NOT EVEN LISTED! What gives?
Sorry Gluggo, sales of the sets with the medals ceased at 3 PM EST today. Rather than leaving the listings there as place holders saying sales have ended they just deleted the whole listing.
But KUD! Noooooooo

Dude, didn't you cancel your order previously?
The Mint has announce the final sales figures on the Medal sets.
sales have been pretty much evenly divided by the services. All around 10-15% with exception to the Coast Guard

That was a DIFFERENT Gluggo!

Ok my nose was starting to grow;
I returned 2 full sets it was about $1000.00 worth.
Last minute late at night the day before I bought 2 Coast Guard's so thats what I have coming late when ever later this year.
New numbers from the Mint:
The Commems didn't fall off the cliff like I was expecting...
And some cold feet, but can't understand how the Air Medals jumped by 251, unless the number was misreported, which, considering the other medal sales by 2/21, may have been the case...
Edit: Because it's February, not December...
Sales on the dollars up to 3/5
Proof +720
Unc. +308
My remaining question is how many will sell by the start of shipments of the coin and medal sets.
I'll start shortening the tables next week...
Numbers are reasonably stable, with product shipping in 4-6 weeks...
Edit: Because the medal sales didn't end twice...
New numbers. Full sales data in post 2 of this thread. These are some pretty bad numbers for a silver commem...
Numbers still falling, with Medals scheduled to ship in 2 to 4 weeks. (Perhaps some adjustments due to bad CC's, etc.?)
the u.s. mint might have to hire some extra help to get all these orders shipped out
And they might hire a few people to hunt down those missing EU sets while they are at it.
They aren't missing.....
Don't quote me on that.
Oh, that's right, I forgot: you got the last one.
the EU sets are selling better, anyone notice?
