Sample of Monthly Coinage Report page

Those exploring the "Chop Marked Trade Dollar" thread might like to see what a page from Mint HQ's monthly coinage journal looks like. (this is one of the sources cited in the TD long table.) The journal has large facing pages with gold on left and silver (& later minor) on right. Each mint has a separate section, so a complete set of this would - in theory - include all coins made at all mints for every day of every month (all by delivery, not manufacture).

This sample is for September 1875, Philadelphia.

Notice that proofs are broken out on a separate line. This is consistent throughout the available volumes.

I'd love to see the page from 1875 with the proof gold on it.

Sorry, I don't have those pages copied. Maybe eventually I can find time to digitize the whole series. Here's Feb 1880 as a consolation. This might be hard to read in the forum because of restricted display width. If you right-click the image you can save it to your computer at full resolution - approx. 4600x1900 pixels.

    Thanks!

Here's the summary of 1875 gold. I;m afraid it's not much help.

They worked Saturdays? Six day weeks but they took Sundays, including Feb. 29th, off.

Saturday was a 1/2 day. If a legal holiday occurred on Friday, they also got Saturday off --- except essential personnel. In Mint language they called Saturday a "half holiday."

Why did they skip numbers on the sheet in the OP...Lines 5, 9, 12, 26?? Cheers, RickO

    Non-working day.
This can also get confusing. Each mint observed local/state holidays that did not apply to the other facilities. There were sometimes closures for epidemics or fires at a mint.

I guess I am not following the data on the 26th make that the 27th. It looks like they listed the face value in the cell, 100, 50, 25, 20, 10. Then they add it up, 205. But they included these numbers in the bottom totals as if they were distributed coins. Is this a clerical error made my the employee or did they actually distribute 100 dollars, 50 halves, 25 quarters, 20 double dimes and 10 dimes on that day?

The quantities are in dollars and show deliveries from the Coiner to the Cashier/Superintendent. The reports are internal and do not indicate when or if coins were issued to subtreasuries or FRBs. Most working level US Mint records are in troy ounces of metal and dollars produced. Piece counts in reports were derived from dollars per denomination.

Just an entry to account for 100 pcs. each of the different denominations, which are coins released (unless not sold, in which case there would be a negative entry later on) from the Mint

Right. But these journals do not show when coins, including proofs, were released - only that they were accepted by the Superintendent. Separate journals were kept of proof coin sales, over the counter sales on Treasurer's orders and other distribution.
