1c 1957-D Never seen this before?

AzurescensAzurescens Posts: 2,783 ✭✭✭✭✭

Hey. Hoping some light can be shed on this.

There's this raised line through the 7 of my 1957-D. Not sure what it is. My handheld microscope shows it sitting higher than some other surfaces on the coin. If one was so inclined, he or she would be able to catch a thumb nail across it.

I can't seem to find other examples. I don't know how many thousand of 1950s cents I went through as a kid but nothing like this ever passed through my hands.

Thanks!

(Sorry for the giant B&W of the 7. It shows a lot more of what is happening even when blurry.)

    Keep looking, fun to do.

Oh, looks like something hit it very hard at an angle causing the raising of the metal. Not a mint error.

I agree. See the incusion to the right of the raised feature. Smoething hit it.

Neat find, though! And nice photo of it.

Since the raised numer is incused in the striking die, one can only assume the line was incused further into the number 7 of the die.

A die break could achive this but highly unlikely. Could it be a scratch from a tool used to clean out something impacting the number 7? I do not see any vestiges of a scrape across the 7 but that does not necessarily mean that didn't happen either.

    Right now for me, unknown.

Damage, most likely from coin rolling machine. I have seen many old Lincolns with sheared dates.

It's post mint damage...the metal was forced to move by something striking the coin.

The REAL mint error is the small die chip on the inside of the 9 in the date.

As mentioned above by JBK, it's
a 'sliced digit' from a counting or
    rolling machine.

It was hit by a post after it left the mint.

    Hey thanks all.

Question for you. What did you like about the pictures? That the black and white removed tones and shines and such that would make a determination difficult? That the area in question was blown up (albeit slightly blurry)? That the pictures were cropped and not 4MB each?

Going to start listing coins now that I've gotten feedback from my other things and more comes rolling in. I was considering these types of photos for errors.

Cheers and again thanks everyone. What an odd and precise type of damage.
