Successful Crossover

jonrunsjonruns Posts: 1,197 ✭✭✭✭✭

I am super pleased that our hosts crossed this 1855-S half eagle at grade (AU58). The 55-S is the first collectible SF half eagle, there were 268 of the 54-S minted but only 3 apparent survivors, one of which lives in the Smithsonian.

According to the SS Central America salvage list there were 25 x 55-S half eagles found in wreck, hopefully they are lower grade and the upcoming sale doesn't hurt the value of this one too much. And maybe all of other high grade SF coins will start to create more demand for S mint old gold.

I saw this coin on DWN's site a few months ago in an ATS holder. It looked really nice by the photos, but I know normally DW tries to cross most everything before sale so I assumed that it didn't cross. I called DW to ask him why he thought it didn't cross and he said he didn't try, I guess it wasn't worth the fees and time. Since I prefer all my coins be in our host's holders I decided to take a shot...

Congrats. I have been trying to crossover an 1845-O in 58 with a CAC sticker. It’s a very nice coin. I tried unsuccessfully 3 times. I am going to crack out and send in...

Looks like a 58 all day to me, wouldn't even be surprised to see it go 60 especially with how liberal these companies grade gold.

Very cool. I really think that the 55-S $5 is underrated and a tougher date to find with original surfaces. Congrats!

Thanks for all of the good things said about the coin.

I forgot to thank #Insider2 for the advice and encouragement to attempt the cross. That's what makes these forums so great!!

I really like the story of early SF gold...coins minted for an exploding Gold Rush economy...coins which saw a lot of real use...

I agree that early SF gold is probably underrated versus its branch mint cousins and I'm surprised all the new-found wealth in Silicon Valley hasn't spawned more collectors. In the interim I'm going to buy as many good ones as I can afford!!!

For those who count days, I received grades from Express in 9 business days. Pretty fast!!!
