Unprofessional listing

I "won" this 1909 $20 Saint on ebay, it was sent first class, it finally arrived a week later. https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/NJIAAOSw8i9aXl~3/s-l1600.jpg https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/N3IAAOSwKXdaXl~9/s-l1600.jpg https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/6AEAAOSwfoNaXl~y/s-l1600.jpg

The seller called it "ms63", I was thinking it may be AU58. Looking at it in hand, the coin has more going on with its surfaces than a porn actress. It has some weird streaks of red toning, cleaning/polishing, etc.. Even with gold moving up this puppy is a loser.

Looks like a rub on the Breast, Knee and toe on the left foot. I would send it back SNAD, and buy a certified version.

Sorry I don't get it. How is a seller's opinion on grade differed than yours considered "unprofessional."?

  • BryceMBryceM Posts: 11,893 ✭✭✭✭✭

Your thread title accuses the seller of being unprofessional. Your post simply expresses displeasure at receiving a coin you don't like. While your accusation might be true, so far, you have provided no information to support this claim.

If you don't like it, just return it. If he doesn't allow returns, you're out of luck, but that doesn't make him unprofessional. If he allows returns and tries to prevent you from returning it, you would have a legitimate gripe.

If acquiring a coin with MS63 characteristics is your goal, you'll have better luck buying one in a holder from one of the two major TPGs.

Finally, your mileage may vary, but most actresses, mainstream entertainment or otherwise, have pretty nice surfaces.

Wish I >:) had your self control. If I had the power, I would not let folks who cannot grade for themselves return coins to folks who cannot grade either - MORE THAN ONE TIME. If they did it again and the coin was as described (within subjective limits) I would take away their buying privileges for a month. Abuses occur on both sides but come on, if you buy a raw coin based on an image that can be manipulated, you need to KEEP WHAT YOU BOUGHT!
    Dip it.

As to this: @oih82w8 said: "Looks like a rub on the Breast, Knee and toe on the left foot. I would send it back SNAD, and buy a certified version."

All 100% accurate! If you cannot see it....well, stick to slabs. BTW, a large majority of these coins below MS-65 or raw actually have: a rub on the breast and knee! Learn it.

  • messydeskmessydesk Posts: 20,477 ✭✭✭✭✭

If the seller delivered you the coin that is shown in the pictures you provided, then there is no issue with professionalism and no grounds to return as SNAD. Return it if you don't like it, and buy one in person so you can get a better look first.

Looks like you got what you thought you might end up with...

CH AU, with a few hairlines, & streaky copper spotting.

Coin shows enough rub especially on the reverse which could be seen in any photo not to be CH UNC even if the seller can't grade.

    Doesn't look cleaned.

The slow shipping method gripe quickly diminishes once in hand.

Can you post your own images of this so we may compare? I don't see cleaning or polishing in the pics but it definitely looks AU.

Sellers who regularly list AU coins as uncs are very annoying. I know grading is an opinion and everything but come on, some of them out there are just egregious overgraders. I would name names but that's probably not for the best. This is my #1 annoyance on ebay if you haven't noticed, so much time wasted clicking on garbage listings.

They make plastic things that tell you the grade of the coin now. Have found they grade better than most sellers of RAW coins on eBay.

  • bsshog40bsshog40 Posts: 4,005 ✭✭✭✭✭

Looking at the link you just provided, I can see every issue you mentioned clearly in your first post! Did you think it would change when you got it in-hand?

  • logger7logger7 Posts: 9,245 ✭✭✭✭✭

It must be that I'm too gullible, I have a lot of trouble grading from images and try to trust sellers within reason.

  • Insider2Insider2 Posts: 14,452 ✭✭✭✭✭

    @logger7

I didn't look at the reverse until someone just posted it. From what I see, that coin looks like an "honest" AU-50 or 53 Max. The thing that bothers me is the scratch thru the hair and into the obverse field that is obvious in the first link you posted. All the more reason to pass.

If I were the seller, you would not get a refund as nothing is hidden in the offer. Unfortunately, AFAIK Ebay treats unhappy buyers much better that legitimate sellers.

Seller also violated Ebay's raw coin policy. You aren’t allowed to post a numerical grade, i.e. MS63.

Return the coin if you can, ASAP.

I shipped it back priority; he should get it back relatively quickly. He said he spent $5.60 on shipping it to me including insurance. He will net more on it than he would have if the ebay sale had stuck. $1375 costs him over 10% on ebay.

EBay will grant a return even if he doesn't if you file a SNAD claim. If you have to ask eBay to step in and rule on the claim, the seller won't get back his FVF, either

Thanks. That's why I don't buy raw coins from pictures unless just for bullion value. Not sure if I'd say the seller is unprofessional but certainly overgrades and doctors pictures to the coins benefit.

Well even tho the seller claims "Uncirculated", you can tell by the pics that it is not. I'm not sure if the Zoom feature works for every computer or mobile device, but on my PC there is a nice zoom feature that ebay uses. It gives a nice clear view of the pictures and you can scroll around the whole pic. If the OP is using a mobile device that is unable to use this zoom feature, then I would stay away from buying raw coins, especially gold!

  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭

Aside from the descriptive 'uncirculated'... and the grade with the picture ...well, I would not have purchased this coin just from the picture.... it looks bad, does not match the descriptive phrases...and not at that price. Cheers, RickO
