1970-S Lincoln Memorial Cent Date

Hello all. I hope you've been well.

I stumbled across this 1970-S Lincoln cent. The coin looks normal except for the last three digits of the date, a determinable line of metal under E in WE mostly attached, and the raised lower serif of the S in TRUST. The lower part of the S is raised.

Here's an image of the date on a 1970-S DDO from Heritage Auctions for comparison.

They look the same to me. Can someone help me understand why mine is "mechanical doubling" and the HA one is not? What seems to be going on with this coin? Just mech doubling and stray metal caught by the E?

I appreciate any and all input.

Cheers,

Az.

    Your doubling is flat, shelflike.

Your apparent random doubling was caused by vibrations whereas the other doubling was created by the actual die on every coin created by that doubled die.

It looks like a good diagnostic is all the activity going on in the bottom loop of the mintmark.

This photo was shared with me a while ago. Its pretty good at explaining the difference.

@1Mike1 ...Thanks for posting that picture.... it helps many collectors when they have a questionable - and usually MD - coin. I have saved it for the same reason.... Cheers, RickO
