What in the world is going on at 9 Oclock on the reverse of this 1945 PCGS MS68 Washington Quarter??


I'd like my copper well done please!

    Swing and a miss! I could only guess, looks like auto body bondo.

    Maybe it is a smudge of dried mustard or chocolate on the slab. >:) I can't imagine giving the coin a grade like MS 68 with a large chunk of gunk on the coin like that. Who knows what kind of mark is under there.

    Planchet lamination. A mint error that in this case is probably only a detriment to the coin's desirability and value. Too bad, as it's a pretty nice coin otherwise.

    Interestingly, this looks MUCH less impressive in the full-slab photograph...... Possibly there is some photographic artifact here, but the strike is quite weak in this area making me think it's a planchet issue. Strange that it would still grade out at MS68..... supposed to be virtually perfect at that grade.

    That coin has bad news written all over it. The mess on the reverse you were referring to and what is goin on with the marks across George's face? MS68? Not from that photo.

    Looks like sticker residue with fibers on the holder. It would have been nice to clean that off before taking the pics.

    My guess is that it is on the holder.

    Some refer to overgraded slabs as Coffins. I like to think of them as Happy Coins.

    It has to be. No one would grade that a 68 if it was on the coin.

    This would explain A LOT.

    1) I cant really imagine what it is, if it is on the coin (looks surreal)
    2) if I tell myself it is on the holder it makes sense to my eyes
    3) that would explain why it graded MS68

    The coin does not represent even 66 quality, let alone 68. Could post a picture of the slab with the cert. number. Possibly the slab is a fake?

    Ah yes, maybe just gunk on the holder.

    If I was the consignor, I'd be pretty furious at those photos. That's a $20,000 coin. You know your auction house is a little too busy when a coin in that price range doesn't even merit a look before the photo is published.

    There is a TrueView. The stuff on Washinton's portrait is on the coin. The stuff on the reverse is on the holder.

    In retrospect, it's hilarious..... looks just like a planchet lamination.

    Those toning striation marks on the cheek doesn't take away from the grade. Remember 1945 is right after the war so go easy on this coin, it has seen a lifetime of history.
