Not sure if this has been posted, but I ran across this article this morning regarding a sole red 1943 bronze wheat that sold recently.

Anyone know the history of this coin.
I'd also like to know, Rick. The article said "Private Sale".
What I like about the coin is how you can see tiny flecks of Zinc on the surface.

What a coin!
Looks like the striking pressures were set differently for steel cents.
Very unattractive coin in my opinion.
Of course, rare as hen's teeth too! Can't stand carbon spots on Lincoln cents

I would rather have a Brown version than this...one.

It is always interesting when coins like this sell.

I personally love it
That's an awesome coin. I don't mind the carbon flecks here... gives the coin a nice, original look.
Not a coin I'd want to hold, but would certainly buy it to flip.
I prefer THIS one:

OOOPS....the pic didn't attach. It was a 1944 Steel Cent.

that is a nice find.
I love the fact that it's still red.

Looks like black mold growing all over it! And why so softly struck when the press should have been set for striking a steel planchet?
Maybe grease filled die?

When zinc coated steel cents were in production, zinc dust was pervasive. Some can even be found in silver coinage.
Images will make the spots look worse then they are. i'd be the coin look far better in hand
Did we just find the buyer?

It's also on the front page at PCGS.COM.
Why would you not want to hold it, outside of being short 999 thousand of the price?
I’m not really buying much at the moment. So nope
I totally agree.... extremely ugly with rarity being the only thing going for it! If ugliness was the deciding factor for the hammer this coin would have went for around $650K ... IMHO!

Is this the one someone found in a Coinstar machine?

If that had been mine it would have been RB or environmentally damaged.

IMO, 63 red was a gift to the submitter. No way you get that grade on another date with identical problems. 61 or 62 would have been more appropriate.
