I went with "very little".
While some know I collect, they don't really have a handle on what I collect, or what I have, (nor do they really care, frankly).
Only the wife has a grip on it, and she thinks I'm nuts.
I said "very little." My collection defines me only in the sense that, like me, my coins are "not quite all there."

"Keep in mind that most of what passes as numismatic information is no more than tested opinion at best, and marketing blather at worst. However, I try to choose my words carefully, since I know that you guys are always watching." - Joe O'Connor
Since no one really cares about my coins but me, I'd say it doesn't really define me at all. I really enjoy them, but could live without them if I had to.

My collection doesn't define me, but it certainly reflects on me.
Doggedly collecting coins of the Central American Republic.

I chose "very little" but I do accept that it takes up a reasonable amount of my time, provides day-to-day income, keeps me mentally acute and highlights character traits. I suspect that like many here the Hobby defines me more than I realize.
Somewhat.

I chose very much as I went from an OCD collector to profitable business.
Interesting thought. I can't say that it defines me...(I could say that about my trading cards, my main hobby). However, an extension of my passion for history, absolutely. I collect solely because it's a tangible piece of history I can hold and study for hours. To be honest I collect publications about coins more than actual coins.
Back in the 1960's when I started collecting Buffalo Nickels, it was because of the almost fatal decline of the American Bison, and I became old enough to understand that not all of the American Indians were raving lunatic savages, like movies portrayed them).
It made me sad at a young age.

somewhat, but I have too many other interests.
But this is #1

Do they freeze up your computer?
My collection is an expression or reflection of who I am but it is a small part. I am multidimensional and have other interests. I think a person is more defined by their character along with their intellect and personality. I have done more with my life than simply collect coins.

no, not the porn.
My coin books, many hundreds, if not thousands.
Toys.
Crystals- hundreds, weighing probably 1,000 pounds or more.
and many other items.

I'm not keen on sharing that I'm in touch with my inner nerd with common folk so I selected if it does, I'm in big trouble.
I collect everything and I'm clad.
I'm a generalist. My collection represents what I know and how.
If I had a few nummulites you could hardly tell me from my collection.
Somewhat..... I have a large collection and many different types have captured my interests over the years... much like my life... many different hobbies, lived in many different states and countries, etc., etc., etc.. That's enough details...
Cheers, RickO
A little, but I have other things that get me excited too. Still, I spend a good part of my free time reading or studying coin related material, so it does matter to me.
It refines more than defines. I'm a geek who's morphing into a bigger geek, I guess.

I can take it or leave it more so than my other hobbies but I'm not giving up any of my five hobbies. My forum name CCGGG contains the first letters of my five hobbies and are in reverse order of interest to me.
Giraffes, Geese, Guns, Crayolas and Coins should be enough to keep anyone interested.
2 out of 5, not bad. Maybe I'll change my forum picture once in a while so there's no guessing.
My coins don't define me at all.
This what I'm known for around these parts!
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
Those that choose to collect see something of interest at some level may not define them, but they are capable and fortunate enough to appreciate the art, design and history associated with whatever they chose to collect. Having that sense, ability and opportunity to pursue those ambitions is what is important. And we should not loose sight of that even though we may not all collect the same things or see what is collectable in the same light.
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
i would say my car collection defines me. Cars were my business and it's out there front and center.
Coin collecting is my little secret endeavor.
It doesn't.
not at all. it's just a collection/investment.
Not greatly. I wish I was a golf pro, but this is nice.

If you asked those who know me to describe me, coin collecting wouldn't even be mentioned.
It's a portion of my life, but not a major portion. Space exploration, both on a professional level and on collecting level, is MUCH more important to me, and certainly helps define me at this stage (roughly 60 years old) of my life.
U.S. Type Set
Too many other interests to define me.
I'm hoping that what we collect is a very minor part of what defines us as a person.....
Great psych question, got me trying to be objective about the why. Im one that doesn't always try to be self analyzing, as a corollary to the heisenberg uncertainty tends to pop up. Like digging into the technical details of a coin, you sometimes can't see the forest through the trees. Im definitely gonna dwell on this for awhile, at least subconsciously.
