Yes....they are allowed in the registry. But there are some pitfalls:
A NEGATIVE rating??
Frankly, I don't care since I'm not REALLY competing. I'll leave it there until it gets upgraded, if ever....
Guess I lucked out. Six N1 coins in my half-eagle registry set and all have a rating of 6.00 or 7.00, could have been worse.
It must depend on which registry set is involved, and the rules they set forth for each coin. The one I posted is for the "Complete" type set.....but I have a cleaned bust half that shows a minimal (but positive!) value in the bust half registry set.
I just think that it's funny. Apparently having a corroded 1794 cent is worse than not having one.
Think I figured out why it's negative. It's probably an unintentional result of their deductions and weighting system.
Example:
For my 1814 VG10 large cent, (shown above as well), the category has a -3 deduction for "Brown", and a weighting factor of 5. So, my "rating" is (10-3)x5 = 35.
All well and good.
But the 1794 cent also has a -3 deduction for brown, and a weighting factor of 6. The assumed grade for a "problem coin" is "1". So, (1-3) x 6 = -12.
So, it IS better to have no cents.....or sense.....take your pick.
Once, a Templeton Reid $5 - tough to find in any condition!
"My friends who see my collection sometimes ask what something costs. I tell them and they are in awe at my stupidity." (Baccaruda, 12/03).I find it hard to believe that he (Trump) rushed to some hotel to meet girls of loose morals, although ours are undoubtedly the best in the world. (Putin 1/17) Gone but not forgotten. IGWT, Speedy, Bear, BigE, HokieFore, John Burns, Russ, TahoeDale, Dahlonega, Astrorat, Stewart Blay, Oldhoopster, Broadstruck, Ricko, Big Moose, Cardinal.
I do not buy 'details' graded coins... but I have some raw that would be so graded if I were to submit them. Some acquired through change, others from flea markets or antique shops. Roll searching can produce these coins and I just keep them. Cheers, RickO
Crypto & hchcoins are spot on for me.
I judge each coin individually, have seen some "details" slabs nicer than straight no problem slabs (some I thought
should be in "details"/problem slabs). Collecting my primary goal (yes the cost does matter if wanting to trade or sell).
"I buy the best example with the best combo of preservation and price. Sometimes the best hope are detail coins. That said, I know liquidity is impacted but I am a coin collector not an investment collector"

They that can give up essential Liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither Liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin
I have owned two key date Morgan Dollars in detail holders. A 1893 S graded as genuine with AU details because it was whizzed and a 1889 CC graded as genuine with BU details because of engraving on on the hair. The problem with coins in detail holders is that they are hard to sell and the price is discounted. I was able to sell the 1889 CC for only $1,300 and I still own the 1893 S.

Coins are for competing.

Quite a few...it often seems that MOST examples of R-5 and above CBH die marriages have problems of some sort.

I don't have any choice because in my collecting series, many coins do not have problem free one to exist
