The most unliked coins become keys

Am I the only one that thinks it’s intersting that a coin can sit on the US mint shelf for months with few sales. Then, when it goes off sale, people lose their minds and can’t give their money away fast enough to get a coin they didn’t like in the first place.

    Opposite concept:

The 2017 Clark ATB P puck was on sale for only a month or so and then went dark and right now is the key of the series. Numbers over 15% less than the preceding 2017 puck

When money is tight, fewer coins get sold. Interest wanes. People go about their business of living. Then voila, reality hits them. They weren't interested and out comes a coin that they missed. It happens more often than not.

Speculators.... Everyone thinks of the Jackie Robinson gold coin.... and a couple of others like the '95W ASE. Unfortunately, they all do not work that way.... but many try in case they do. Cheers, RickO

With moderns, final mintage determines future keys. Sales determine final mintage. Expected flippability ultimately determines sales.

Those fractional gold buffalos come to mind. I can’t believe I passed on the quarter oz proof. A lot of people did. I don’t even regret that for the fact it ended up so flippable but more that now I really want one but the premium is crazy.

There are numerous exceptions. Popularity and final mintage determine future keys. The 2001 Buffalo silver dollar is a prime example. And expected flippability only determines sales on prospective low-mintage coins. The Boys Town gold proofs outsold the uncs by a wide margin, but I don't think anyone bought them with flipping in mind.
