Stunning or not, the Civil Rights commem only sold 86,712 pieces (proof and uncirc combined). I'm not sure there was a lower modern, unless you count those issues that had the proof stuck at one mint and the uncirc struck at another.
The WWI commem will certainly do better than that...
That was true for quite awhile. But the Boys Town combined total has blown that away with around 43, 964 (unofficial). All of the Boys Town issues have ended up as the lowest mintages for all denominations of the moderns as far as I can tell.
I received the email from the Mint about these yesterday. I'll buy at least one to keep my modern collection current. Just curious...is there a reason for the January release? The Mint's site states to commemorate the centennial of America's entry into the war but that was in April 1917.

And Lions Club only did 85.7K. I was only looking at final mintages, and truthfully both commems last year are so far of my radar, that I haven't paid attention.

The mint (usually) always releases one in Jan, the other in March. Since the commem will be on sale through the year, they want it on the shelf as long as possible.
So if you want to buy one in April, it'll still be available... (And if you want to get technical, it's a 0.33% error. (Three months out of 1,200.) )

Make sense...sort of. I understand a set release date for common stuff but WWI was a national event and the IMO the Mint would benefit from the publicity that will wind up around the centennial of the actual date. They could then sell them for maybe a year afterwards....but ya know, the flexibility of gov't institutions has never been very much.

With a "30-day window" for ordering, does that make all medals produced eligible for "First Stike" status?
Not necessarily. Considering the mintage is 100K across all product options, they don't know exactly how many of each medal would have to be made, so it's conceivable that you won't receive the medal within the time-window because they have yet to strike it. They may strike X number of medals initially, but they'll have to wait until the 30 day window closes before they know how many more to make.
The single commemorative COIN won't sell out @ 350,000 across all products.
At 100,000 for all medal sets, it's hard to guess about a sell out for any single one. Are they going to be hard headed and make 20k of each or flexibly mint to demand? I don't know.

It's 100K across all product options. So there's no set number, and will strike each medal to demand, so long as the total doesn't exceed 100K. It will be interesting to see how the mintage settles out.
Here's my guess.
Grunts
Flyboys (If I buy one, this might be the one.)
Squids
Jarheads
Coasties (If collectors actually buy because of design, this may slot into #4...)
(My apologies if someone gets offended by that list. )
I think the medals may sell out, but not first day. Because of the medal sets, the uncirculated commem may outsell the stand alone proof. The remaining 200K or so commems may be problematic after that.
Alarm set to 6:35 so I can't miss the opening salvo. Still not sure if I just get the PF and Unc Dollars....or......get the 5 medals and have 4 additional, redundant, wasteful Dollars. I don't like this Mint tactic at all.
I guess I am confused it the Proof coin separate from the 5 medals? Anyways I was going to sit this out but I don't think I can.
Ok I see the proof is by it self but there going to pump out 350,000 Proof coins that is alot. I bet those will not sell out and price will drop later. Only talking about the proof coin.
You can get the PF and Unc dollars by them self. If you want the 5 service themed medals you have to buy a set of proof dollar and medal. Medals not sold separately. So if you want the medals you need to buy 5 proof dollars too. This is an evil money grab by the mint.
Thanks Kud maybe wait for the graded 5 coins but I imagine the 70's will be expensive since their quality at the Mint is Not very good for a perfect coin. Still cheaper in the long run I think. Wonder if APMEX or MCM has any for Pre-Order?
Yes,because they don't know the spread between the 5 medals Mintage Limit: 350,000 across all product options
Product Limit: 100,000 across all five coin and medal set products
Household Order Limit: None
When I ordered they could be added to the cart but were on backorder. Now they are all on back order without being able to be added to the cart. looks like they went fast.
I suspect the aftermarket will be very interesting, from what I can tell from my orders. I tried ordering separate shipments for each medal set I was interested in.
At the very start, there was no 'backorder' status. I was able to order during this period; the status now reads 'Processing'.
I ordered a couple that came up as 'backordered'.... interesting that the status now reads 'Being Processed'.
My conclusion... the Mint probably had a very limited number of each already minted, anticipating at least some demand with each option. These may be processed right away... thus starting the early release time clock. When the very limited number of each is exceeded... the orders are then flagged as backordered... and will be minted to final demand later. IF this is true... then there will likely be only a very small number that qualify for the early release label... if so, could be a bombshell for the aftermarket...

Not sold out...back ordered. Only 100,000 between all 5 medals. Mintage depends on how many of each are ordered, Maximum for each if ordered equally would be 20,000. That won't happen. So there could be one way under that and one way over. Won't know until the 100,000 max is reached.
So much for my theory that a limited number of each option has already been minted... the set I ordered when 'backordered' status was shown, now has it's statue changed to Processing also. So... who knows? Will any be shipped early? Or... will none be shipped until April or so...

Sets will be made to order and not shipped until the end of May so I would think that ship date would start the FS clock for the medals

Should have stuck with the two eye design
I'm telling you an armed flounder would sell sell sell.
That's a wrinkled old man not one of the young pups that served. Lousy rendition.
What do they think? aaaah, nevermind.
Do you think this will sell out within 1 hour or 1 month?
I am having a hard time if I should buy right away or wait.
I have a feeling the Air Service medal will be the rare one with the Denver Mint. Maybe I should just buy that one.
But then the Coast Guard Medal coming from the Philadelphia mint might be the rare one.
Everybody is going to order the Marine Medal since there are alot of Marines out there.
The Army guys wont want to dish out the money so that might be the rare one!
Lots of Navy guys out there too! Ohhh geeeez!

I gotta say, this is one of the more confusing screens I've seen at the mint:
Those are beautiful coins.
I especially like the Air Service coin.

Looks like they've straightened out their problems on the medal sets, and all indicate "back order" and can be ordered...
(Fixed it for you...)
I only ordered the Army medal set. I think it'll be a nice set in hand.
So I thought you could not order until 12 PM eastern time I guess that is not the case
Did they sell out in the first 5 mi uses?

Uh, it was the case...
They're all still available. (Backorder is not the same as Currently Unvailable. If you want one, add it to the cart and buy it.)
Thanks............that's what happens when things get posted too fast (also a little bit of CRS going on)

They did goon sale at 12 noon ET. My order was done at 12:02

Mine says "Processing"

Another cast of purposefully Mint made rarities............
Can't keep up with this stuff.

Well, it should be noted they sold out their stock of 2018 congratulations sets, and those sets are currently on "back order" as well.
It's not the mint playing games, it's how they classify what's in stock and available, or will be available for purchase.
So much for my theory that a limited number of each option has already been minted... the set I ordered when 'backordered' status was shown, now has it's statue changed to Processing also. So... who knows? Will any be shipped early? Or... will none be shipped until April or so...
I ordered when it was still 12:00, order number 55552xx, before it showed backorder.
