Excuse the "graphic" of the coin passed by my San Franciscan friend. Do you know anything about it?

Made from brass with a very interesting design depicting human figures in a very natural way. I was told there is a silver edition as well.
What should I do to preserve the brass?

    That's a So-Called-Dollar, HK-400. It was from the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition.

They came in bronze, gilt, and silver.

Do nothing to preserve it aside from placing it in a 2X2 Mylar or submit it to our host for grading.

    Cheers

I'd just keep it as is and put it in a 2x2 or such. Certainly worth preserving by protection. Do not do anything to the token in the way of attempting to clean it. Just leave it as is. These sell for $50 or so, so probably not worth the grading fees. Now if it were silver/gold that would be a different story.

My friend just told me that it is maybe made of silver, he does not know exactly what metal it made of.
How do I test it if it's silver without damaging the coin?

What color is it? If it is yellow it is bronze. If it is silver it probably is silver. Is it the same color as you quarter in you pocket or more like the color of a penny?

Do not coat it in vasaline. I made that mistake and it is a dickens to clean off.

I'm sure someone will chime in but is the silver and bronze the same design? I don't think so if memory serves me correct.

Why would I coat it with vaseline?

To protect the silver plating. It's an old housewives method to keep silver from tarnishing and take away the lackluster appearance.

Not recommended on copper plated though as the red turns to pink (as vaseline is made from a byproduct of gasoline).

    Weight it.

HK-399 is silver and weighs ~30g
HK-400 is bronze and weighs ~25.5g
HK-401 is gilt and I don't know the weight.

It looks like it has been harshly cleaned. Don't waste your money having it slabbed.

Nice SCD.... if it were mine, I would self slab it... either buy some snap together slabs or airtites (I prefer the slab since you can include a label if you wish). That will protect it from random handling damage. Cheers, RickO
