One person's dreck is another person's treasure. When a majority of what you sell is five figures or more, a little thing like an 82cc morgan in ms66 is about as close to a waste of time as you can get.

Was this the auction to end all auctions previously mentioned on the boards, oh about a month or so ago?

Sounds like it. Wonder if the firm is in Virginia and the collection will be in a collection of one of their "partners"
Collector and Researcher of Liberty Head Nickels. ANA LM-6053
I always feel that she writes her reports and market updates from such an elitist standpoint that I can't imagine that 90% of collectors left in the hobby could even remotely identify with her feelings. I will say that she's not targeting that 90% of collectors either so I guess she is accomplishing her goal of alienation of the little collectors that make up the majority of people left collecting coins. There are many people including myself that are happy and excited to buy the dreck she speaks of. But by all means please please bring on the dreck at lower prices for my Morgan PL date set please (The Morgan PL/DMPL market hasn't been in decline even in the lower grades).
Things I like to do: Collect PL Morgans. That’s is all.

Unfortunately, you have completely whiffed on the definition of dreck...or you are buying ‘low end for the grade, problem or flat out overgraded’ coins for your set.

Her use of "dreck" is aimed anyone that's not regularly buying or selling better than mid 4 figure coins and up. If you're not of better means then you are a collector or seller of dreck. That's how it comes across.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

I could definitely see the "dreck" definition applying to cull coins, the "walking wounded" coins that have decent grades but zero eye appeal and are hard to sell, but not to any cac coin.

That may not be how it feels to you but it’s how it feels to us. Feelings can be different than the truth and let me get it straight that I don’t personally feel that Laura’s like a mean/bad person or anything. I know you’re buddies and all but it still it just feels elitist to me. Even the adverstisements they run in the rare coin market report have me feeling that way.
You can’t argue with the way something makes one feel even if definitions are wrong and intentions are different than outcomes.
That being said I respect you from a numismatic perspective immensely and your opinion as well TDN.
Things I like to do: Collect PL Morgans. That’s is all.
Sorry for your feelings, but she has many times in the past addressed this very issue by defining what dreck and widgets are and why she doesn’t respect them. And emphasized that she cares about collectors at all levels - that she’s preaching to buy high end for the grade because it provides the most value for everyone.

Everyone is not ever going to be on the same level playing field in this industry. The "dreck" in my opinion is the bread and butter of the grading services because there is so much more lower end for the masses out there and available than super high end quality thats out of financial reach for most.
If you put thought and consideration into your collection and appreciate it for what it is, then who cares what others think...
Believe me she couldn't care less about how we feel about her here. She is in a COMPLETELY different world than most of out here. I don't even slow down when I walk by her table at shows.

Hey Laura:
Thanks for taking time to post a recap of the show for those of us who couldn't make it. I could almost feel my calves and feet hurting . I would volunteer to work for you guys / gals without pay just to walk around and be on the team that offhandedly buys a half disme. Must be a lot of fun (actually really the perfect job). I'll bet a lot of people are envious.

I wish Laura would not mention the "dreck"... in her reports. She doesn't deal in it, nor do her clients. Reports on her segment of the market are appreciated, but she doesn't need to belittle other collectors to do so. She apparently does a great job in her niche. It strikes me as petty to put down lesser dealers/collectors. That may not be her intention, but it seems to be the perception of the unwashed masses. Using someone's example above, a Ferrari salesman doesn't need to bash a Kia to sell a car.
I have no need to hear a "Dreck" dealer's thoughts on the market for 6 figure coins. I also have no need to hear Laura's thoughts on "Dreck."

Legend customers are just as susceptible to buying dreck as anyone else. She wants to keep them out of low end for the grade , low eye appeal coins. That's her message. Dreck comes in all shapes, sizes and price points. I think a lot folks automatically associate dreck with lower priced items. That couldn't be further from the truth.

I for one thoroughly enjoy reading Laura's market reports. Knowing her a little probably changes my interpretation of them to some degree, but I hope they never change. Boring and mundane they are certainly not, just like her posts here used to be.
Reading over some of the old pm's from her, there is no question that she really does care about our hobby, even if she often comes across as the proverbial bull in a china shop.

I don’t consider some of the MS63 slabbed Morgan’s I bought lately for $45 dreck. They are rather impressive when stacked!
MS66 better date Morgan is a "widget". I wonder how she regards PL, Star and DPL graded coins, just more "widgets"? Jaded.
