I really believe this coin should grade higher then it is. What’s your take?

It's a little hard to tell from the photos as they're a bit out of focus. It's a fairly new slab, which means that at least two professional graders looked at it recently. In the absence of evidence to the contrary, I tend to assume they saw it the right way. This is usually, but not always true.

The coin is well-struck and seems to have nice detail. At a glance, it looks pretty gemmy. There's a few abrasions scattered around. I'm guessing there's a wee little bit of hairlines somewhere, a little something funny with the surfaces (left reverse field), or something else that's keeping it out of gem territory. If you twirl it around under a light and get back a thousand little flashy sparkles, you've got enough surface "stuff" to keep it out of gem territory. That's not very sophisticated, but I hope it makes sense.

Random 1922 Peace Dollars from CoinFacts......

    MS64

    MS65

I would say that the 64 is correct.....look at Liberty's hair on the 65.......your coin doesn't have that detail from your pics.

It's at least a 64 in my non-expert opinion.. Certainly seen more than a few slabbed 65s that didn't look that nice.

I would give it a plus but it wont change the value that much in 64. Nice coin, hard to tell the strike details from photo.

From my limited experience it is difficult to get a Peace Dollar into 65 holder. From that pic it looks like there's just a little too much going on in the field on obverse and reverse.

I really like it for the grade and would pay a premium for it.

Thanks. I will work on pics just using cell. I think if it still 64 it has to be plus or on the positive side. Agree I have seen worse 65. Price doubles at each grade level.

    The 23 looks 64, maybe a plus.

Kat, that is a nice coin for sure albeit a common date. Bryce is a better judge than me, it's a series he knows well, but my experience tells me that a brilliant Peace Dollar really has to POP to grade MS65. PCGS is and always has been very conscience of luster and how it equates to strike, so my thought is that the strike is a bit weak in some areas.

If you don't mind a little advice from a published photographer, get some natural sunlight. You don't have to go outside, by a window will help. If your phone has a flash function, try that as well. Mine does but the glare is too much to be usable, but each phone is different so it is worth experimenting. Hope that helps. Peace dollars are my favorite US series.

I'd say based on the poor pictures, that it's a PQ 64.

It’s hard doing natural light here in FL but perhaps later when it’s in the 70. Appreciate the advice @BillyKingsley you very kind too.

    Can't tell from the photos.

The hit on the nose and the light scratch across the cheek and whatever is going on beneath the Y I think are what held it. All minor distractions. Someone correct me if I am wrong but no hairline scratches are permitted on a 65.

I'd say it's a very solid 64. They are very reasonable right now. Great catch!
