Duplicates...who collects them?

I've been working on the Silver Roosevelt set which is 48 dimes and over the course of building this set, certain dimes appear more often than other dates. Also certain dates tend to tone really well and I noticed recently I have over 10 specimens of several dates/MM's even though I have 0 of others.
Anyone else collect duplicates of the same coins just because?
Later, Paul.

I know the feeling. I have about 10 different 1921 Peace Dollars. Some I get and cant sell just because I like them so much. I don't think any other date in the series I have felt the same way about.
It's not a matter of "collecting" dupes......but it happens. Sometimes you find a nice coin, then replace it with a better one.
Dupes are good to use in trade for another coin, something you need.
In addition, depending on the year and mintmark, dupes have a value all their own very good for a possible swap, or just plain bullion.

Duplicates are just natural in this type of collecting hobby.
You actually have to make a hard/ harder effort to avoid them than what it takes to just allow them to happen, although I do understand that one can unnecessarily tie up a lot of one's money/ capital if one is not careful.
And most coin collectors do have a few favorite items that really turn them on.
I spent years building a set of mostly Gem & better Jeffersons and got many of my best coins when I'd buy somebody's whole set just to pirate the best coin or three out of it, so, yeah, I know what you mean. I try to move that kind of stuff along, though.
2 months ago I thinned out and sold all of my raw 1916P Mercury Dimes that I had. Now I only have 12 PCGS Graded 1916P Mercs.

I love the design of the Connecticut commem half, and I am intrigued by how different it can look based on wear and toning, so I've ended up with a lot of them...blast white, circ-cam, speckled, rainbow, sepia...
I can't seem to let any of them go.
Seriously, how am I supposed to choose just one?

If you are from the place (or just like the coins), those are rather nice pieces and why would it bother you? No big tie-up of your money.
I tend to gravitate towards 1916 dimes too.

Just about any slabbed coin can get way below bid or close to melt. While I lost most of ones I bid on yesterday won 2 at 52 pct mv. A WLH cdn bid at 160 got for 115. Fewer collectors means am getting more pickoffs.
I'm good with duplicates. Each coin stands on it's own. If it's pretty, I'm happy to have it in my collection.
Toned Peace $.... my collection is a big black hole - dups dont matter - once they enter they never escape...
I have many duplicate Walkers.
I'll always take in a great coin.
Part of the reason is that many are NGC coins, so I needed PCGS examples for my set on this side of the street.
Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

Nice Connecticuts, @ProfLiz! I recognize one of them quite nicely.

For coins I keep, I don't really care if they are doubles, triples or whatever; if they are cool, then I attempt to allow them to stay.

At any given time, I have roughly 100 1911 $2 1/2 Indians.
Great design, and a nice group.
I like #4.
Sell the rest, lol
Duplicates seem to be unavoidable when building a set. I always find an improvement for my IHC set and then I am left with a reasonably high grade duplicate. But I do find some comfort in all of this in that I can always sell of my top pops and have a lot of money to "invest" elsewhere. I actually like some of my dupes better than the higher grade coins in my registry set, like this 1890:
It is a way cooler coin than the 65.5RB in my set.

@OldIndianNutKase , that is a beautiful Indian.

...it can get a little sleepy with coins but I rarely grow tired of duplicate hundred dollar bills...U.S. of course...ink fully dried and all
I tend to duplicate 1859 half dimes. It is a one year, Philadelphia Mint only variety with hollow stars. It became my favorite and while I have open slots in the registry for other coins I do snatch them up here and there.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
I concur-just gorgeous!
I have duplicates of 1913 Var 1 Buffs, 1921 Peace $1, and many misc coins with nice color.

Sometimes it's easier to justify keeping duplicates if you give them a purpose such as a grading set

Do full roll Peace dollars count as duplicates if all same year or can I just same one roll.

Best place to buy !

I used to have a bad addiction to Barber Quarters, especially the 1896 S:
here are a few:
There are others, but no pictures right now.
I was shooting for a roll, stopped a few short.
and then, there are the 1913 S's.

@Treashunt, You got me beat & i'm not feeling so bad now suffering from duplicateitus

Hit the pub at 5PM happy hour two for one.:)
I collect very few duplicates because it ties money in the same date and mint mark combination.
I have three Delaware commemorative half dollars because I've never found the perfect one. Each of three has something good about it, but none are quite "perfect."
I have two 1907 No Periods gold eagles. I have one for type and another in an MS-62 holder that has characteristics I like. I think that it is under graded, but unless I crack it out and get it re-graded, it would not bring that much any way.
I have a few political tokens that were made from the same dies, but in different medals, Those are not really duplicates, but I usually don't collect that way.
It is an addiction, I guess

My one-time urge to buy any decent pre-1844 large cent that I found that was reasonably priced led to a number of duplicates....but some I could justify if they were a different Sheldon or Newcomb number
WOW........this thread is drawing all of the hoarders in our hobby out of the weeds.

Dupes are everywhere in my Morgan pile, especially 1895-S. I thinned out things the last two years, but still have 37, all in PCGS holders.
I have duplicates, but have sold many, many more duplicates. I have seen collections with super rare only known duplicates.
IMO, lesser duplicates should be sold to free up cash for an even cooler coin.

Yes indeed....and not just the collectors are hoarders - talk to Larry Lee of Coin & Bullion Reserves sometime. He probably has at least two dozen high relief Saints right now. I was at his table a few years back when he announced he just acquired his 50th 09SVD, giving him a full roll.
A dealer friend of mine likes 13S dimes, and last year said he had at least 5 rolls of them squirreled away.
Not me.....I like to sell my dups to free up money for coins I need,
And you wonder why I decided to stop collecting HTT's...... There ain't any left for anyone else once Broadie is finished!
Best, SH
Well, let's see... does an A, B and C Dansco toner set of Franklins count? Plus extras of course.
If not, well then, how about an A, B and C Dansco toner set of Washingtons, plus extras?
Finding toned Washingons from the early 1940's is much tougher than finding them from the 1950's, courtesy of there being no paper/cardboard Mint Sets until 1947.
Here are some 1945-D's:

An extra I got for melt value as I liked the letter transferral from the (Whitman) holder...
Here's the C toner Washington 1945-D:

Then the B:

Finally the A:

I have a few slabbed 46-s Roosies, as they usually come nice and toned up! Probably a half dozen more raw. Couple other silver dates I have more than 1.
A nice coin is a nice coin. If it's worth the money to me, I may buy it. A collector on the floor once told me "if you know its nice for the date, buy it! Worst case, you can use it as ammo down the road"
Are any of the 46-S's RPM's?
I’m guilty
We may need to talk as I have over a dozen 1946-S Roosies.
Later, Paul.
Joe, you are more than quilty.......you are a repeat offender.

Oh, me too guy's!!!! Ready to see what's available...
Joe, you are probably the worst offender of hoarding Buffaloes. Some of us are concerned that your Buffaloes might start inbreeding and ruin the whole herd. All that great toning may start interacting in an unpredictable way. You can move half your herd to my ranch, to save the species.......
OINK
Love duplicates of this date.....
