Tracing things we see on a coin is a great exercise. So during some part of this process, something occurred to leave this mark on all the coins. The only two stages where this mark could occur on all the coins are #1 or #2.
A dent in the neck would be raised on a working die.
Or a dent in the working hub.
Or a raised mark on a master die.
Or a dent in the master hub that was produced by a raised mark on the model or more likely a hit, touch up, slip, etc. to the master hub.
I think that the best guess is something either intentional or part of the design happened to the Master Hub.
I would think that it was done on the master hub during the machining process.Perhaps someone here will find the answer.I just thought it was odd and worthy of discussion Perhaps a loose pivot arm in the engraving tool dipped into the die and wasn't noticed .

It looks like a hit to me?
It is on all the coins. There is an indentation at the chin and the one lower down the neck. Not so much on the 21's.
Morgans are strange.
Always in the same place. Weird if it is hit in the same spot on lots of them same size and placement. Here is a PR65

If you compare your Morgan to others you will see it's a normal mark on the coin.
Hey, leave her Adams Apple alone. This is still 2017, we can't judge...
While there is an indentation there as minted, your example does 'appear' to have an additional 'hit' that expands the mark. Cheers, RickO
nice coin. i love the reverse on this one
@Rich49
There are NO dumb questions.
Successful transactions with : MICHAELDIXON, Manorcourtman, Bochiman, bolivarshagnasty, AUandAG, onlyroosies, chumley, Weiss, jdimmick, BAJJERFAN, gene1978, TJM965, Smittys, GRANDAM, JTHawaii, mainejoe, softparade, derryb, Ricko
Bad transactions with : nobody to date
OK, can someone tell me why it is on so many coins from different mints and with different dates?
Because it was on the master hub.
The slight indent on the neck does appear to be as minted... the OP coin appears to have an additional mark with it.... Cheers, RickO
I think the original question was why is the neck dent there?
Does anyone know?

Actually--- the portrait is of Marie Antoinette. The "dent" is part of the "cut here" line on her neck....
OK. Just a bit of fun.
You know everybody trusts your knowledge, Roger.
So I wonder if the French had anything to do with input (pun intended) for Morgan during the design phase?
Pete
No, but the British did...
There is a French design that resembles Morgan's Liberty -- of course, so did his wife. He brought the design with him from England in Sept 1876.
