My 1883-CC Morgan Dollar, purchased for $15.00 in a batch of "Mixed CC Dollars" in the GSA sale. The mixed CC dollars were described by the GSA as having never before been circulated by the US Government but culled out of the entire Government holding of CC dollars since they did not meet the numismatic standards for "uncirculated" certification. Now in a NGC MS65PL holder.

I am not sure. The difference between an early die state BF-1 and BF-5 is challenging from images. Either way, both die marriages are rare.

After looking through the doubledimes Website, I think this is the more common BF-2 variety. The obverse is clearly from obverse die 1, but the mint-mark location seems to be "High Close CC". Interestingly, I don't see any of the die gouges around stars 1 and 2 on the photo and the BF-2 was the final use of the obverse die. I'll look with a loupe when I get a chance.

Yes, you are correct. It's the BF-2 die marriage. The close-up of the mintmark really helped.

Most CC coins have relatively low montages compared to the other branch mint coins. That’s definately the case for Morgan Dollars and CC gold. That and all the nostalgia behind them.
