  • I now truly believe that all coin dealers are pond scum. One step below real estate agents and Lawyers. What do you all think? They can't help themselves from their bad behavior. May be I haven't dealt with enough of them to actually find an honest one. But let me give another example. I was on the phone talking to someone a while ago who you all respect sooo much, not going to mention any names. Was asking why this early American silver dollar that was for sale on Ebay had no sticker on it. Told him that I have seen it in a previous auction and it had a sticker on it. Well after some back forth about how I should be careful about buying coins cause they could be knockoffs he bought the coin while I was still on the phone with him. I know what he did. You cant't even trust the gurus!!!

For what it's worth, I think the coin is cleaned, and won't straight grade. Still a heck of a cherry pick though.

This thread amused me for 5 minutes.

OP just dropped a grenade in the room, everyone is pulling shrapnel out now.

Some have a more vivid image of that comment. My wife is a surgical nurse, and over the course of 35 years of marriage, has extricated many hand grenade fragments from my poor body over the years. She keeps a suture kit in the bedroom, and recently removed a nice piece from my thigh and stitched me up. :(

Order cancelled!! Thanks so much for all your help guys. All I can say is Paybacks are a bitch!!!

Were you the buyer? if not, how can you tell the order was cancelled?

can you leave any feedback on a cancelled ebay order? (although I agree it is warranted.)

Does anyone know if the buyer got the coin? I hope he/she did! great find.

This thread should have not been made so close to the end of the auction. In my opinion the OP cost the buyer the deal. Then he cries about someone calling him a grinch. I could think of better names to call him.

I DIDN'T cost anyone any deal. I had nothing to do with this sale in anyway. The seller was notified by another before I posted this listing here.

PS: I can think of some choice names for you too.

  • davewesen, yes I was the buyer but Ebay says I have to wait 7 days to leave negative feedback for this power seller. Yea power this! Anyway its coming! And as the pawn broker said in the movie Trading Places "In Philadelphia it's worth $50 Bucks" More getting even coming!!!

If the deal was already busted before you posted the thread then you cost yourself future business for no reason at all. What were you thinking?

Ebay is a huge marketplace with far more traffic than our little coin forum here. I seriously doubt that this thread cost the sale, it seems far more likely that someone who missed the BIN messaged the seller and spoiled the sale.
That is, unless the seller told you that this forum clued him in.

I do agree though that this thread should have waited a few days after the sale date

Oh, that nagging temptation to post breaking news! Perhaps we've all done it and without malice but sometimes there are unintended consequences.

These tired old sayings can ring so true in today's instant gratification world:

    Patience, grasshopper.
    Silence is golden.
    Less is more.

Regarding the deal itself: Does Ebay give sellers the right to break a deal if a material error is discovered before delivery?

  • jwittenjwitten Posts: 5,218 ✭✭✭✭✭

Whatever you do, do not threaten or tell him you will leave a negative if he does not ship. Ebay will remove that. Just leave the negative without telling him or threatening him.

What was I thinking????? Um, this is a coin forum and somebody made a great rip on this coin. There are still great buys to be had on eBay. I'm sure I will not lose any future business because of this thread. Only a brain-dead idiot, that I would not want to conduct business with, would think so.

Goldcat hang in there at least you learned a great lesson. You know this person and what he is like. It does not sound like you got really burned other than loosing out on a singular coin. There are always a better deal just dont miss it when it comes around! I got big bucks in my account (my big bucks is small for most here), and I am on the hunt always looking. Maybe I will find that special deal. Just be glad your alive and healthy and enjoy the New Year and enjoy! Be safe Goldcat. I am wishing good things for you in 2018! o:)

Can't you just admit it was in poor judgement to post this? Is it that hard for you to see? How many of us have mentioned this post jumped the gun and could have spoiled the deal? Your attitude reminds me of my mother in law , i promise nothing you call me can be worse then that comparison.

Dang, what a mess. Whether jealousy or ignorance, guess this thread serves as a warning to all about the potential dangers of playing Paul Revere and posting so soon after a great cherrypick. Sorry for your loss.

    Spoiled the deal. lol

I had nothing to do with this deal. I posted the completed sale after the auction had already ended. If the seller is unethical and reneged on a vaild sale, that is his problem. If posting about a completed sale is poor judgement, than nobody should ever talk about the sale or listing of any item ever sold.

...the reality is : the dealer had every right to cancel the order, as there was an error in the listing. I do not hold the messenger responsible for what the seller did subsequent to auction end. Despite all that, the OP is not who I thought he was, nor is he the culprit here. He is one of us.

You are a loser. People are nicely saying you were in poor form, no matter how many times it is said.

Yes, I looked at your coins in the your ebay store, and you will NOT lose business from me, because I do not buy over hyped garbage.

Too bad to the OP on losing the cherry-pick. The only winner here is the antique dealer - maybe he makes the original seller right...ARC should know he jumped the gun too soon on this and just man up to it and move on.

I respectfully disagree. I don't think he showed any poor judgement in posting a public sale after the sale had concluded. The poor judgement was upon the unnamed dealer that saw the public sale and claim jumped it.

  • I got this message from the seller today covering his A.
"New message from: manhattan.beach.antiques Top Rated Seller(226Turquoise Star)
Hello, Sorry for the delay in responding regarding the cancellation. Holidays..sick kids..etc. I wanted to explain the reason for the cancellation as I imagine you are heart-broken over the loss of the potential deal of the year. We are selling this item for a dear client and made the terrible error of not adding the "0" in the price. We are totally aware of the value and truely made a careless mistake of not posting the zero in the price and launched the listing without proofing the price. We immediately received a call from our dear client who obviously was irate that the price was incorrect and you snagged it up before we had a chance to correct the listing. We'd like to find a way for you to still get a deal on this coin as I know it is quite rare and has some special features. We plan to list it again and would be happy to reduce the price to what our client wants to receive (and eliminating our cut) and set it as a private listing so you can purchase without competition.." Message came in two parts continued in my next post.

message cont... So, we'd love to work something out with you and we just want to see if you are open to make a special arrangement before we determine our client's lowest price. Please let me know and again, I sincerely apologize for our error and how it has affected you. I'll await your response. Thanks!

Strange, he made two mistakes, the fact it was an 11d and that it was listed at a tenth of fair market. Sounds bogus but I would play along and see what his bottom line is.

I'd have cancelled the sale too! Whatever the reason...

Whenever I make a very good eBay purchase, I always hold my breath until it's in my hand. That's the way it works on eBay and most Buyers know and accept it. That doesn't mean that I'm not upset for a few days...or weeks, depending on the size of the fish that got away!

  • CaptHenwayCaptHenway Posts: 32,493 ✭✭✭✭✭

Bull-loney! Forgot to add a zero? So it should have been $3,240.95? Yeah, right!

Had the BIN price been $325 even that might almost be plausible, but not at $324.95.

Okay so you were to busy to reply to me about the cancellation and it took you 4 days to cancel the sale and refund my money. Yet you were not to busy to list new items every day of the holidays? So i know about the Philadelphia dealer who contacted you, coin community is a tight bunch. You missed a 0 that's a good one :)) But sure even though you insulted my intelligence with this message I would listen to a price on this coin. Although I have my doubts that what you say will fit with what I have in mind.
