Dealers ... How often are you offered recently made counterfeits when at shows or in your shop?
The last twenty years has seen an explosion in counterfeit coin production in Asia and perhaps elsewhere. The internet has enabled these counterfeits to be spread far and wide among "on-line only" buyers (and others). How often are dealers being offered these counterfeits when at shows or in their shops?
All glory is fleeting.

I've also noticed lots of counterfeits over the years at country auctions. These people all disclaim knowledge or responsibility, but they always seem to have current generation counterfeits in numbers, so I don't believe they are old fakes from estates. There's a small group of vest-pocket scammers (I think) that seed all the auctions in our area with fakes, damaged, harshly cleaned, etc.
I see them from time to time, even at my coin club. They're definitely out there.

That is such a shame.... all the more need for seminars on counterfeits and books... I have Bill Fivaz's book... probably need a new one for the modern's market....Cheers, RickO
I made a mistake in not calling the police years ago. There was some clown making the rounds up here in the Northeast. It must be 10 or 12 years ago. He scammed a bunch of people with his Chinese stuff. He was written up in 'Coin World', both before he was caught and after.
Anyway, he came into my store with a bunch of early Chinese made dollars. I just told him where he could go (he - double toothpicks) and he left. I had no idea at the time he was a big-time traveling scammer.
This should help:

The only counterfeits offered me have been from collectors lol.
I remember a collector at a show offering me a raw set of $2.50 Indians and when shown by myself and another dealer his set was fake he was in a state of denial but later came back and apologized “you guys are right.”
