I just plain old enjoy collecting coins.

I am 68 and collect coins from the perspective of what I like and not the possible gain in investment. I am very sure there are many like me still out there. I have what most would consider a small collection. Don't get me wrong. If you collect coins for future gains, so be it. That is also a great way to collect and has to be a lot of fun also. I try to avoid paying $20.00 for a $3.00 coin, so I have fun reading the coin magazines and searching the internet to gain a little knowledge on the subject. I love the detail and beauty of the frosted cameos on the U.S. Mints proof 90% silver coins. Just plain old purdy to me. The detail is amazing. They don't cost an arm and a leg either. I am one of the idiots that still searches pocket change before dropping the coins in a jar. Found a 1944 wheat penny the other day. It had been a very long dry spell since finding a silver Roosevelt dime several months ago. Happy as a kid at a carnival over that one. Found a few Canadian coins along the way and laid them aside, just because. I am always searching the big internet auction for decent circulated Mercury dimes and Walking Liberty Halves. They are my favorites. I really only go for silver coins. I like the bling. Another old age thing. My wifey of 50 years loves the Walking Liberty Half Dollars so it is usually a pretty easy thing to convince her that I really NEED the one I just found on the internet. I don't need her permission and I'm not scared of her, but after 50 years, I sure do respect her a bunch. LOL. I really enjoy the coin forums also, even though I don't usually have a lot of anything interesting to say on them. I need a decent camera to take some coin pics. The one I have just doesn't do close ups. The grandkids will end up with them anyway one of these days. Enjoy folks. Just sayin. Mike in Missouri

A positively perfect post.
I nominate this as POTY . . . .

Welcome! The active population on this forum is a bit skewed to the more expensive / business side of things. True collectors remain the backbone of the hobby and it’s where most of the fun is. Good to have you here.
Nice first post Mike. I think much the same way you do. I am in it mostly for the enjoyment and if i make a few bucks down the road that's good too.
A lot of truth in that post! I sometimes get caught up in the "investment discussions" here. But in reality, I just buy what I like, and hope that someday I can sell them for some reasonable percentage of what I spent on them. It's just a hobby for me too. Guess the difference is that I'll go for a well worn coin of the 1800's before buying a modern proof. But as they say, if we all yearned for the same thing, there wouldn't be enough for all of us, and most of us couldn't afford them!
Welcome to the boards.
Great post !
Searching a jar full of wheaties on a cold winters night is the stuff of dreams.
Enjoy the hunt and enjoy the company here.
Merry Christmas.
Welcome Mike. I am another life long collector and recent new Member here. You summed my love of collecting perfectly.

Great first post and 68 is not old!
...68 is the new 38...I like being 7 years old with that math...my wife doesn’t like me that way but most of my coin purchases make more sense
Welcome and you are not alone. I'll admit I like a good flip, but truly enjoy buying or "finding" an older coin that just is -- collectable.
Cheers ALL! AK
Welcome
Thanks for the warm welcome guys. Mike in Missouri
Looking forward to getting to know you, and by the way that is a great post.
Welcome aboard Mike. Like you, I am just a collector. I joined this forum several years ago and don’t post a lot. But there are knowledgeable people here and they share that knowledge. Great introduction Mike. Merry Christmas everyone!

@GUNNER63755.... Welcome aboard. That is a great post and also represents my coin collecting interests.... I never sell coins, just acquire them.. and I buy what attracts me. Silver especially.... Now, I know your name is Mike... however, your forum handle says GUNNER... would you also be a firearms aficionado?? Guns and coins do go well together...
Cheers, RickO

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......

Yep. I love my guns also and have far more than I need. Mike
Just because we're crazy given what we write about here many times, doesn't mean your way of collecting is wrong or that it needs to be justified. Bravo for your passion and for introducing yourself. Welcome!
