At least Boys Town appears to get a donation on every single coin that the Mint sold...
“Public Law 114-30 authorizes the Mint to strike and issue up to 50,000 $5 gold coins, 350,000 silver dollar coins, and 300,000 half dollar clad coins in proof and uncirculated finishes. Customer demand will determine the ratio of proof to uncirculated coins minted within the authorized mintage limits.
The sales price of each coin includes surcharges-$35 for each gold coin, $10 for each silver coin, and $5 for each clad half dollar coin-which the law authorizes the Mint to pay to Boys Town in support of its mission of caring for and assisting children and families in underserved communities across America.”

Bought 1 on the first day and took it out of US Mint box to view the coin in hand. The coin is virtually flawless. I am glad I now have a low mintage modern day gold coin

So they made 3000. Wow!
LOL.
How soon will the Mint be striking batches of 500... just as a leap of Faith ?
I wouldn't totally rule that out. After all... there are some on backorder with a note that they would mint more. I personally don't think they will... but who knows? Regardless, even if they did... I would say the issue is the new key...
if it were October or November, an additional production run would make sense, in December it does not.
An item could be on backorder due to availability at the distribution center, meaning the transfer of coins from another location to the shipper.
It is pretty clear with a number like 2,999 that they minted 3,000 and that’s it. The final number should settle out under 3,000.
Despite my eagerness to "strike it rich," I too am glad to have stayed out of this fray. Eventually, you just have to say "enough is enough" to ugly designs and what may be a questionable subject for a gold coin. On the other hand, really glad I bought the NPS and Mark Twain, two subjects absolutely deserving of commemoration in gold--even if they won't allow me to retire!
On another note, it's been interesting to see how what I consider to be real quality moderns of the past decade (2008-w 1/4-oz gold eagle; 1/4-oz gold buffs) are softening in price on eBay. Just shows that there really isn't the collector base out there to support a mintage of much more than a few thousand.
If this type of mintage occurred in 2006-2008 timeframe, this Coin raw would have been priced at a few thousand dollars—-now, who knows where this goes, but if it can’t at least double (raw)....we definitely have an issue with the base
You could be correct about the 'Salad Years' from the Mint 7/8; yet, the coin offerings from the Mint were much more attractive then with less emphasis on the ugly spousal betties and the Boys Town mutt's.
Yep. Picking the right mint product as investment is more difficult, and nowadays, it has less to do with a coin’s endearing design, except perhaps to realize that the coin’s visual appeal may be inversely related to its investment potential.
Ugly is a good thing?
Whatever we think of the design—and I’ve seen worse, this Coins mintage (sub 3000) is going to drive its value
You can’t ignore a sub 3000 mintage $5 Gold commem. As Wondercoin stated earlier in the thread, I also believe this one will be the winner for some time.
To date, there are only 35 or so MS gold $5 commemoratives making the set an appealing one to collect. It's still a simple set to collect now, but how about a few decades from now? For many not even born yet, those looking to assemble the complete set will still value this low mintage issue.
Subject? Meh, Ugly? Arguable. Both effect demand. However, this coin will be extremely difficult to knock out of the key position and as such IMHO will retain a significant premium.
7/8... I’ll go a step further... no need to “dump” such a coin either - unless by “dump” you mean electing to take the roughly 90%-100% return the coins have enjoyed in about a week.
Just my two cents. Wondercoin.

I 'm not a buyer at current prices and would be a seller of MS70's in the next 6 months. The MS70 is not a long term hold because of high pops (which will substanlially increase!) and an unpopular design.
Since Women don't generally express much desire to collect Coins , much less buy them, is it realistic to expect that Breast Cancer Coin to outsell this Boys Town thing?
I know I don't want that Pink BC Coin at all. And when the AIDS Coin comes out with Harvey Milk on the obverse, I won't want that one either.
Now when Marburg and Ebola get recognition on a Coin I'll give the Mint a Thumbs up. But I'll not buy any of those either. I don't collect the "Disease" category.
I think many are worried too much about POPS of a sub 3000 mintage Gold commem
You are missing the point—it’s a sub 3000 mintage Gold commem
There won’t be one even close anytime soon
This will stand quite a while

Several of the First Spouses (both unc and proof) are sub 3000 mintages. A few are even sub 2000. And even if they have their own series, they are definitely commems.
Yep. Maybe pump to dump just enough to cover costs in an effort to hold the remaining for free, but it may be better to hold all. I’d guess most of the current sales are going to dealers to hold for a while.
This issue is very likely different than others.

First haags aren’t part of the 5 dollar Gold commem series
They are an animal all on their own
Any many have sub 3000 mintages, but in that series that is the norm
Sub 3000 mintage in the 5 dollar Gold commem series is completely different—this issue is the KEY bu a huge margin
I suppose the reason one thinks the first spouse series are billion is because of their use of “non standard” weights/planchets
Purists believe the commems utilize planchets that are of “historical standard” i.e. 2 1/2; 5; 10 Gold: silver dollar and half
Not the first spouse non standard 10 dollar 1/2 oz pure

Five dollar gold commems aren't really a "series", and they aren't even all five dollars. The "regular" gold commems includes several "non-standard" coins such as the $10 gold/platinum Library of Congress and several other $10 gold issues. Not to mention the 2016 restrikes of 1916 coins, and the recent "Liberty" series, and the 2009 high relief double eagle, and the 2014 gold Kennedy half. Hardly anyone collects complete sets of "standard" gold commems or First Spouses - most collectors acquire individual coins that they like. Which coin do you expect will see more demand in the long run - the 2017 Boys Town (mintage 2999) or the 2014 Eleanor Roosevelt (mintage 1886)?
When is the Bitcoin bubble going to pop? There's obviously too many participants piling on out there. Reminds me of the Wall Street Scene in 1929. Until the pop us Coin Freaks can ride all the way down the mountain.
And we better hope there isn't a Deep Lake at the bottom of the slope.
There are a few odd standouts in the 1982-date series ($10 LOC); but the others are non standard planchets
The $5 run of gold commems are a series to most—and they are collected by many
Spouse coins are Bullion
according to
Public Law 109-145 Sect. 203(4)
Comparisons of the Ford and Nixon spouse coins and the Boys Town coin may be exciting but probably only because the final mintages are announced just a couple weeks apart at years end.
Apples and oranges.
I think a strong case can still be made for the Jackie UNC's being "key." I understand why the Jackie MS70 is still very expensive, but I'm unsure why people pay $700+ for an MS69.

I agree for now, and think Jackie will be used as “the standard” for some time to come, but I wouldn’t be surprised if, eventually, the value of the BT MS69 levels out ahead of Jackie, and the title of “key”, in time, goes to BT.

It would seem that at some point they stopped making POGS out of Paper and switched off to Metals. When did that happen? Why weren't we warned?
And with this latest craze, Crypto-Riptos they've switched off to the realm of the imaginary. Why waste paper or metal?
