It’s about a year later now. I just assisted Justin with writing an interesting article on these coins. You can read it under PCGS news (and stories)- the link is on the PCGS homepage.

I looked but can't find it........ I went to the link at the top of this page that says HOME.....is it there somewhere?
I have no idea. You can write to the editor and ask him (he is also a board member here). I did just post buy prices on CCE this morning on both Mint State and proof gold Boys Town Coins at around 10%-15% over current sheet. I may go even higher on the Mint State coins depending upon how many, if any, I am able to buy.

Isn't the article kind of self defeating if you are actively trying to buy these coins at under issue price. Seems to me you wouldn't publish an article like this until you had a large supply of the coin and were ready to start taking a profit.
The price of the Jackie MS70 is a result of only 72 pop. There are already several hundred of the Boys in 70 plastic. The Jackie 69's are a mystery...they shouldn't be more than $350.
Djm... Many coins sell for under issue price. Both Justin and myself enjoy writing about them. I was just talking to a well known dealer today in the PCGS dealer lobby who was telling me he is currently buying up proof sets from the 1970s and 1980s for as little as “$1.75-$2.00/set” (talk about under issue price!) The article on that subject is almost writing itself in my head right now!

Or you can looked at it from another angle. Imagine the backlash Mitch and Justin might encountered if they brought tons of this issue and THEN publish the article. That would be liked conflict of interest and self promoting.
As is, there's business integrity and they seem to preach that.
Sad to say, but I don't see much demand for coins in general - let alone modern gold commems. The pendulum does swing in both directions, but at this moment there is nothing remotely close to the excitement for low mintage Moderns that we were seeing in 2006-2008.
The counterintuitive approach would be to pay close attention during times like these.

Look up north at the number of items the Royal Canadian Mint puts out with mintages under 1000 that don't even sell out. Low numbers for moderns usually related to no interest and not rarity.

The RCM issued coins have very high premiums over the precious metal content of the coins. I like a lot of their designs but just can't seem to pull the trigger at $119- $149 for a one ounce coin.
Not really that much different that the US Mint. Currently $56.95 for a silver dollar commem that has about $11.90 in silver value for mintages in the 100k range instead of 1k.

I Almost all the MS and PR70's I have obtained for less than issue price-over fifty different and a few duplicates along with several in OGP that I was fortunately able to purchase at around 100.00 from my dealer about twenty years ago when no one else was interested in them. I still they are a good way of stacking some bullion, with the added plus interest may return to the series.

My take on the boys town was that it was popular for Flipper’s due to the “rarity”, not because of the lack of attractive design.
Jmski Makes a good point about the 2006 to 2008 years of not only exciting rarities but also beauties.
A lot of us that were around during that time, including Mitch, understand the unexpected passion we all experienced.

And, today I raised my public posted buy price to now a full 20% over the sheet price.

Exactly. Those were the golden years where seemingly anything the mint put out was worth a profit right after your order was accepted. Though beautiful coins, I thankfully sold into the hype every time and was able to use those funds to purchase things that were really interesting to me.
I cannot imagine a time when these Boys Town commemoratives will appeal to anyone, low mintages and all.

Just for some Sunday morning chat (and speaking of the 2006-08 period), I remember a similar thing was said in 2006 about the first year of “First Strike” Proof Gold and Platinum Coins. They essentially wouldn’t appeal to anyone. Lol.
Less than a handful (and I am being generous with that number) of dealers “played” the “First Strike game” in 2006 with the precious metal proof coins, creating some of the lowest pop First Strike coins out there to this day. And, today, some of the most sought after and expensive!
Just my two cents.

Martin. There are about 2,947 MS pieces across the entire world. I’m not overly optimistic I will get “flooded” with them. But, I do plan to keep bidding for them on the dealer network and I did wait to post my buys until After the article was published.
But, DCW might be correct- these coins might never “appeal to anyone”. But, one day long into the future- if gold spot hits $2,500/oz., they will melt for about $600+/coin! Lol.

I am a buyer at melt.
I don't see this issue taking off at all. And it is unfair to compare it to Jackie Robinson. Two totally different collector demographics.
If I had any, I'd sell them to Mitch at 30% over sheet.

Well Mitch, I hate to tell you that have I have 2 but I'm not selling either to you (or anyone else). They are going to stick around along with my other MS modern gold commens... So, no need to worry about me adding to the flood you are worrying about.

Nice article.
According to the article, Grey Sheet price of this coin is only $360. That can't be true.
Proof that just because something is low mintage doesn’t mean it’s rare (or popular)
"According to the article, Grey Sheet price of this coin is only $360. That can't be true."
bigmountainlion - Actually, there was a typo. The sheet price is not $360, it is $350! We will fix the article tomorrow to reflect the typo.

Where does $350 or $360 price came from? I have yet to see any unc coin that was sold that low.
