It's still not a coin. At least legally as it does not have the denomination, etc.

    Mad skills baby!

(Actually, there were quite a few blank planchets that came out in 2000 when the Sac was released with NGC having 'graded' the lion's share of them. Seeing the above in what I believed was an NGC slab kind of cinched it for me.

To get the dollars to circulate the Mint sold bags of them at face value. Think $500. We bought a few to give out in the cash register at the coin shop and I found a blank.
Then some customer came in with an opened bag he had been spending out of. He got bored, and asked if we would take them at face value. I said sure, ran them thru the coin counter and noticed another blank as they went by.

Aren't the blanks found in 2000, the only blanks that date can be attributed?

WTB... errors, New Orleans gold, and circulated 20th key date coins!

Well, the Presidential dollars were struck first and then given an edge inscription that included a date. If a planchet missed getting struck but then got edge lettered, it would have a date.

If a planchet was found in a Mint roll or bag, I would think that the date of the surrounding coins would hold true for the blank/planchet as well. I'm not sure what standard NGC or PCGS would have for slabbing the planchet with that date, however. It would possibly had to have been opened in their presence.

And a quick google search netted me this: PCGS certifies 2006 dated, blank planchet - smalldollars.com

I believe there is also a blank planchet with edge lettering, which included the date 2007.

If 2000 was the first year this composition was used and it was submitted in that heat, I think we have a conclusion.......

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

For the benefit of our fellow Forumites, as the U.S. Mints were getting going on striking Sacagaweas, the Denver Mint did not have the proper equipment for blanking and/or annealing the manganese-brass planchets. Not sure about upsetting. While this was being installed, Philly was making blanks or planchets and shipping them to the WInnipeg Mint for treatment, from where they were shipped to Denver. While in Canada they picked up a few stray foreign planchets and coins that then got struck in Denver. Remember seeing one Israeli coin as the undertype. THis could be a Canadian quarter planchet.
