Crack-out Game

What's the highest graded PCGS "MS" coin that you've ever cracked? Common coins excluded! I once cracked a 1950-D MS67 Jefferson nickel because I was certain it was full steps. I WAS RIGHT! It came back from PCGS as an MS66FS...oh well, just one of many lessons I've had to endure in this lovely sport of coin collecting.

I've also cracked quite a few SP and PR coins in 68-69, just because I prefer them outside the plastic (I'd never crack a PCGS70). What is your story?

I have a few 67's that look better than my 68's. Very tempted to resubmit them.

Maybe one day I'll send 20-30 and just see what happens just for fun.

I get cold feet....maybe just because I've never cracked a coin before. I just have this vision of me ham-handedly adding fresh new scratches to previously wholesome coins. :astonished:

Instead, the few times I did cross-overs, I tended to trust PCGS to crack them, (at a nominal 1% fee), and be honest and impartial in the grading....

Having said all that, I think the highest graded coin I sent in that way was probably only MS-63, being more interested in XF classics than MS-67 moderns....

Are you happy with this. I personally would rather have the coin in the 67 holder with the nice steps.

    Just recently I cracked a PCGS OGH'd 1946-S MS66 Dime. Came back in a MS67+ for a full 1.5 grades higher.

    Later, Paul.

Not happy! That was many years ago and I'd certainly like a do-over--but I've gained a little wisdom.

Fortunately, there is a regrade tier now. I wonder if it would go 67 FS on a third submission.

I cracked an MS66FBL Franklin out to dip and resubmit. The dip did not go well, as the toning was etched into the surface of the coin.

The only time I tried it was also on a Franklin. I had a 54-S in PCGS MS65, I was convinced it should be FBL.

Came back FBL all right, but MS64FBL. Took all the fun out of it. I'm a small timer, I'll leave the crack outs to the pros.

I cracked out a 1972 DDO MS 64 BR cent because of some white stuff inside the slab getting all over the coin.

    15 + years ago, I bought a deal
of over two dozen NGC MS-70
1999-W $5 gold Eagles with the
    "W" Unfinished Proof dies.

They weren't selling for me (then)
so I sent them to PCGS to cross.

    I didn't know it/realize it, but for
    MS-70 cross-overs, at that time,
PCGS's policy was to crack them
    out first !

There were no MS-70's sent back
to me in PCGS holders -I blew 'em
all up sending them in uninformed.

I just sent to PCGS a 2017-# ######## ####### ##### ########### ###### ##### NCG-MS70 to have it cracked out for a possible PCGS MS-70. I don't want to reveal which one cause I don't want to look stupid even though I probably do just for telling everybody. But the good news is I only sent in 3 of them so the damage will be minimal. After all its only Money! :(:(:(:(:( I prefer the PCGS over NGC. :*

when I went to the FUN Show around 2003 there were about 6-7 PCGS/NGC $2-1/2 Sesquicentennial Commems at the Superior Galleries table, graded from MS62-64. I picked an NGC MS62 that I thought was the nicest looking coin in the group. after about a year I cracked it for PCGS and it came back MS63. I considered doing the same thing again but sold it after about five years.

I've cracked out higher graded coins but not with success of moving up.

I believe many of us cracked out "cleaned" or "damaged" coins and re-submited it. I did have some luck that a few came back MS63 and MS64

I sent an NGC 53 Barber dime to CAC. Didn’t CAC. Cracked out and sent to PCGS where it upgraded to a 55. Then it CACed

Cracked a few MS 64 coins for guys who wanted the coins for the Danso 7070 album. Cracked out a couple AU gold coins for TDN’s neighbor, once. I didn’t particularly want to, but...

  • amwldcoinamwldcoin Posts: 11,269 ✭✭✭✭✭

Not the highest grade, but best coin.
I tried my 1897-O Half graded AU55 for reconsideration I think 3 times. Finally sent it in as a regrade(which is the same as cracking) and got my AU58!

  • ms70ms70 Posts: 13,956 ✭✭✭✭✭

Highest was a 58 that went to 62.

Lowest was an 08 that went to 10. Funny thing is that I wasn't going for an upgrade. There was some debris in the holder and I just wanted to make sure it wasn't stuck to the coin.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

There are significant dealers who will submit multiple times until they get their grade.

  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have not cracked out any coins.... There are two that tempt me though.... I definitely think they would upgrade ....But I won't.... Very happy with them as is.....Cheers, RickO

I cracked an MS67 silver Ike to put in my Dansco album. (I’m not crazy enough to crack a 67 clad - I can’t even bring myself to crack one of the 66s I have.) I don’t play the resubmit game much but I have had good results so far and have a small group that I will probably send for regrade at some point.

  • joebb21joebb21 Posts: 4,773 ✭✭✭✭✭

Ive done 67's that go ms68 and 68's that go 69.

No 69 to 70 for me

may the fonz be with you...always...
  • CCGGGCCGGG Posts: 1,267 ✭✭✭✭✭

I don't typically play the crack out game but I might for a more valuable coin (>5k) if I really felt it was assigned a lower grade than it deserved. Although I have done a few crossovers. Most recent one was a 16d Mercury dime. It was in an ANACS holder graded at 20. It was a problem free coin with nice eye appeal but dealer couldn't sell it for 20 money. I "watched" it sit in his display case for over a year and finally offered him the price of a 12. He took it. I sent it in and PCGS crossed over at a 15. Actually happy with that.

Thats a lot of money to spend on a gamble. Certainly not financially possible for us small guys.

Not high grade but I did crack an 1824 Capped Bust half dollar out of an NGC VF-25 holder and sent to PCGS. It came back XF-40. Hard to beat a 15 point upgrade.
