A compliment to member "FredWeinberg."

Member "FredWeinberg" never fails to offer his professional expertise and assistance to those with questions about possible error coins. Regardless of the inquiry or "status" of the error, he invariably provides a clear, objective and thoughtful response.
Would that all professional numismatists could, or would, freely offer such assistance to new and experienced collectors!
Well done!

Fred is true professional. Has offered me personally great advice.
Thanks for the kind words, but I'm one
of many here who offer their experience
and expertise in various fields, including
mint errors.
...and I don't specialize in Die Varieties, so
that limits me too, when it comes to
RPMs and some of the doubled dies.
I do try to help out with questions posted,
but sometimes you can't make firm determinations
from photos only.........
And, I have a policy that I will reply to any email
question about an 'error' coin up to three times -
my initial response to the photo, and two followups.
After that, I then decide if it's worth answering a
forth time - sometimes yes, sometimes no.
Just yesterday, I got a very nasty and rude reply
to my 2nd email to a person, who didn't like
what I said after they asked for a value for a
rotated reverse Presidential Dollar - they were
certain that it was worth about $5,000 or so,
and I told them I thought the retail value was
$200-$250, or thereabouts.
And, although the NGC holder didn't have a
to the degree of rotation, I told them that
I thought it was rotated 90 degrees - they
insisted it was rotated 93 degrees, and that
I didn't know what I was talking' about. !!!
Don't know what I pressed to get that large type,
but it should have said :
"....although the NGC holder didn't have a # to
the degree of rotation.......etc."
You started a new line with the pound/hash sign.
Lance.
As a newbie, the comments and expertise on this board by Fred are amazing. For a novice to have the eye of a true expert in his field, offing his opinion openly and without an angle is a treasure. And I don't even have any interest in errors.
Fred,
Your comments on post are appreciated and valuable to the coin collecting community. There will always be a few jerks to deal with but don't let that stop what you do on this site. We appreciate it!!
Fred is a stalwart of the forum and makes it a better place.
...and I am sticking with the 93 degree rotation!!!
I totally agree with all the above.
Your willingness to share is priceless!
Thanks Fred!
Good thread @RogerB
Agree with all the above. First class he is.
Fred is first class all the way, my only problem with him is that he doesn't do any shows in the Northeast, so I have never had the chance to meet him in person.

Randy Campbell told a similar story about ANACS. For awhile they put the degree of rotation on the label. One day an irate customer called and told the head grader that his "team" got the degree of rotation wrong (apparently by 1-2 %). After taking some heat, as soon as the fellow hung up, a decision was made to stop indicating the degree of rotation.
This crap never ceases to amaze me. If it is worth $5000 then he should sell the damn thing and prove everyone else wrong. These people are just looking to have their own opinions validated. If FW had agreed, this person would have thought FW was an unimpeachable expert, but if FW disagreed, then he is just a know-nothing hack.
I'll betcha Fred could even accurately give the degree of rotation in regards to Kevin Bacon..............
Pete
Sean, you're one of the people I'm
sorry that I've never met before !
Bet we'd have some fun conversations at
a coin show.
Dont' forget that the ANA next summer is in
Philadelphia -
As a Born-In-Californian, does that qualify for
"Northeast"?
(to me, anything on the other side of the
Rockies is 'East")
Not that I'm saying you're wrong or anything like that, but how much more would the coin be worth if it really is rotated 93 degrees? I mean, when was the last time you saw a coin that was rotated 93 degrees???

Fred, you're a nice guy no matter what you say!

I could probably do Philadelphia. I mean I'd prefer Boston or NYC but I can get there and back in a day. Marking my calendar now.

I could not agree more on Fred's graciousness.
You're a true asset to the numismatic community Fred !
Hey, I live close enough to the Rockies that the Sun goes down behind them about 4 PM, but I am technically on the other side of them from you. I am in "the West." The "Midwest" runs from Kansas to Ohio. To me, "the East" starts at Pittsburgh!
Mr. Weinberg is one of the true bright stars in the numismatic firmament, a prodigy, truly a coin genius, a unique and may I also say one of the reliable authorities in this business and vocation or avocation which ever the case may be. I always look forward to his words of wisdom and am a little surprised we have not seen him at the helm of a major institution. He will no doubt succeed at any task he puts his mind to.
Thanks for all the nice words....just giving back
for 46+ years of being a dealer, and before that
a collector of errors.
Logger7- I might not be at the helm of a major
institution, but I have lots of people who think
I belong IN an institution !
Not to be a contrarian but the one time I ever talked to him he made an statement of absoluteness and when I asked for clarification due to a logic contradiction he came back with “I can’t explain it, but when you have been doing it as long as I have you know it when you see it”. I know what that means and thanked him for his time and left unimpressed.

Sorry 'bout that - I don't know what coin or
error I saw, and also don't recall if I said that
in regards to something that was damaged,
and I couldn't explain how it was damaged,
or if it was an error of some kind, but I couldn't
explain it.
Sounds like it happened at a coin show -
Do you recall the coin or error you showed me?
Multi stuck trade dollar with chop marks. PCGS sent me over to talk to you. You could have been having a bad day. To be clear I wasn’t wronged or anything, you just clearly didn’t want to be bothered or explain the opinion.
I do it to people all the time at my work, I do not have the moral high ground.

Fred is without question the go-to go for coin errors. I'll join in and thank you so much for sharing all that with us here, Fred.
Nice post, Roger!
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...

Wish I still had the photo of Fred at Error-a-Rama '73. The girl he was with......I sure hope you didn't let her slip away!
Was the multi-struck Trade Dollar real,
or a fake multi-strike?
If it turned out to be a fake multi-strike,
yes, I might have said that because I
couldn't tell the exact way it was counterfeited.
If it was genuine, let me know what I said about
it being real, that I wouldn't explain.
My apologies for being a bit 'stand-offish' that day.
It's nice to see that when someone has a question, Fred will usually give a pretty detailed answer to the person's question just about everytime. I have been collecting, buying and selling almost 30 years and I have A LOT to learn still myself and I learn from people like Fred and others like him. I also appreciate listening to and learning from all of the other Professionals taking in as much as possible and have learned from the Novice and the New as well. Thank you for what you do and your knowledge Fred, I greatly appreciate it as well.
I am still searching for the Third One. I can only image how many folks just like me have brought coins to show Fred. He has always taken the time to explain. Great Job................Enjoy Tom
I used to be famous now I just collect coins.

No fair! Any photos? I've seen a double struck Morgan dollar and double struck $20 Liberty. Please show us your piece.

I would really like to meet that handsome rascal.

Fred is unquestionably one of the "good guys" here.
I am someone who has come by his table on occasion, know him by reputation, and have conversed (Long Beach) here and there. I am always impressed by his willingness to impart knowledge to all of us, either in person, or in our chat room here. I will always support him without question . . . . . . .

Thanks for being part of my internet life Fred (oh and the one time we spoke via phone).

Mr. Weinberg is a most excellent gentleman of the old school. I greatly respect his numismatic knowledge and business integrity.
While it was a number of years ago, he offered me strong prices on a group of off-center and broad strike coins (which I happily accepted), and he also directed me to another dealer on some exonumia that I wanted to sell (a favorable deal resulted). Mr. Weinberg helped me a lot and he doesn't know me from Adam. Very many thanks.
What is a Weinberg, you ask?
Weinberg
1. (wine'-birg) noun 1) Knowledgeable numismatist with remarkable patience. 2) Numismatist who gives freely of his/her vast knowledge. 3) Numismatist who joyfully educates others clearly and definitively without ego, pretension, or rancor. 4) Plain ol' good guy!
You are aces, Fred.

Couldn't agree more. Back when I was new to this game, Fred provided some insight on some Canadian error nickles. I found it amazing that a pillar of the numismatic community would take the time to respond to a coin nobody.
My World Coin Type Set
I've never interacted with Fred, but I think about him every time I see an error coin. I've always really enjoyed your commentary on various coins, and I've day dreamed about what it must be like to get to see some of the coins you've seen over the years. Thanks, Fred!
The people at the top of their craft or profession are ALWAYS the most helpful, understanding, patient, etc. They're genuine.
They are the MOST helpful to the newbie. That's how they got where they are. The top. And they're smart.
Mr Weinberg's knowledge and willingness to share is what makes these boards so invaluable.
There are a lot of people here that graciously/nicely/calmly offer their learned advice to us, thanks Fred and thanks to all

The importance of the forum is the knowledge and information that is readily shared by members
I stopped by @FredWeinberg table at the 2016 Dallas National Money Show and he was very cordial and approachable. We chatted for a spell and he brought out a few unique items from some boxes in the back that were not displayed. I stepped aside when a few people were in my peripheral vision wanting to "get in".

I don't collect errors much myself, but I've run into Fred at a few shows and he was always friendly and down to earth. My wife was admiring his case of 'boo-boos' and he took the time to explain how that happened, what the value was an so on. Even non-collectors can relate to the major error coins, like the multiple strikes or wrong planchet being used.
