Bust Half Exonumia, & post yours

1TwoBits1TwoBits Posts: 464 ✭✭✭✭

I've always liked this piece of Bust Half Exonumia. It has some crossover appeal to other collectors as well, as it appears to be an old Fireman's Pin/Pendant, Engine #2. It must have been quite the endeavor to make. I had Todd (Blucc) take these nice pictures for me recently in Baltimore so you can see the details.

Please post your Bust Half Exonumia if you have some: love tokens, counterstamps, etc.

Wonder how many elderly member's will glance at that wishing they could number 2? :)

I'm really struggling with that die marriage attribution. Maybe O.106?

In its day a person gave up a lot to have that made. Great work and meaning

Ok, Lance, I just had to look. ;)

I see no doubling on the portion of Liberty so no 106...

Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

I know the provenance of this one, it used to be owned by Bill the Cat

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

Thank you for the comments and for looking.

@lkeigwin and @OKbustchaser, you guys are awesome, trying to identify the Overton number! I didn't think it could be done, particularly due to the date of 1831.

@Treashunt and @EXOJUNKIE, thnak you for posting your examples. Cool pieces.

This is a Whitcomb - Adams counterstamp that came out of an old upstate NY collection, but I'm not sure of the Overton variety yet. Not the best counterstamp job, but I really like it regardless.

can you rotate it 90 degrees to the right?

Looks like a date: 1886 at the top of the counterstamp, but inverted.

    Very interesting

@Treashunt, the date is 1836. I've seen the stamp with different dates, and sometimes it shows a month. There have been other threads referencing this stamp that have other images (not sure if these will create a link, never tried before):

Ok, Lance, I just had to look. ;)

I see no doubling on the portion of Liberty so no 106...
Curl to center base of R plus full serifs on 1 in date lead me to 118 or 119. Star erosion indicates 119.

The 106/107 doubling is usually weakest on the last few letters. Is it possible that this worn, LDS just doesn't show it?

I tried an overlay with only partial success because the pendant is misshapen. I could get only a few stars lined up at a time but those matched the 106/107. The date numerals were spot on and the curl/R relationship is good.

I wouldn't put money on it, though.
    Lance.
