Since historic and dark side - you might consider a USSR ruble 1924.

A British trade dollar would also expand you to Asia a bit.

    RE:
I'm going to be distilling down my certified collection to a box of 20 over the next half-decade, ... I have identified 13 coins that I would like to acquire - ideas for the other seven anyone?
You don't own a single coin now that will be in your box of 20?

I'm a box of 20 guy. The best thing I like about is that there are no rules. Once you have the 20 they can always change if you want them to

That's seditious. The Reds are gonna overtake us. :'(
However, I do have a British trade dollar and a pillar dollar. :)

    And a wannabe pillar dollar.

I would consider a separate Darkside box of twenty and a US box of twenty for a total of 40. I doubt that my other ideas would pass the straight face test so I will yield the floor

This is what I do when doing a box of 20. I try to buy it right so it can grow in price like a retirement does. That's why I try to cherry pick so I can buy a coin at lets say $50.00 then after it's put in a holder with all the mumbo jumbo it's worth $600 or more then it will go into my box of 20, It Takes some time to do this but it's worth it later.

Just guess if you would of bought 20-$25 Palladium Eagle at $100 over melt or even $200 over you would be in good shape right now. Some of the new stuff as it comes out can be a still of a deal you just need to look at all the stuff and try not to buy the junk that's key.

Just always buy something special at the right price,
The stuff you see all the time will always be there but the good stuff you need to look for it. Have fun just me dumb Type2 playing with friends.

    Hoard the keys.

I would suggest 20 different beautifully toned type coins pre 1950, AU55 or better, with only one of each design type.
For the barber series I'd suggest a half, for the seated, a dollar, for draped bust a dime, capped bust half dime, etc.

I have a box of 20 and they are all Lafayette dollars under AU58

  • I'd get a mint error in the box--pick your favorite series, and then buy a really eye-catching error for that series.
