Trivia: How many times has Nixon appeared on a coin or a U.S. struck metal?

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,927 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was watching CNN's special regarding the 70's & 80's and there was a segment detailing the rise and fall of President Nixon. Interesting enough to give me pause and wonder if there have been commemorative coins or medals struck of him. Do you own any?

PS: Just for fun:

Edit: Oh, sorry. I qualified it as any US MINT struck medals or coins......My bad. There are numerous private strikings of Nixon out there. Many by the Franklin Mint.

Nixon was in the public eye for about four decades from 1946, and the instances of him appearing on coins and medals are very very numerous.

I own both of these medals, but it was easier to rip these images than to find the pieces!

1957 Second Inaguration Eisenhower & Nixon (Nixon as Vice President a second term)

1973 Second Inauguration Nixon & Agnew (Nixon as President a second term)

Both of these official inaugural medals are readily available and inexpensive in bronze.

Also remember that Franklin Mint was super-active while Nixon was President and they made many "news" medals for Nixon's Trip to China and other current events involving the President.

Go to Google Images and you can see many photos of the wide range/amount of Nixon medals available,

These may not count (as I think they're privately minted?):

Of course, if you don't limit yourself to the US, Liberia is a good guess. They'll put just about anything on a coin ;)

Did the U.S. mint strike his presidential medals in silver? I was not aware of that. Did/do they do that for all modern Presidents?

Were there "appreciation medals" for Nixon as there had been for some of his predecessors? (These were distributed to people involved in various trips, etc.).

Not officially. They were struck to order. Actually, both the 1st term and 2nd term 3'' medals were also struck in 10k gold. The metal used in the striking had to be provided to the Mint by the purchaser, and the manufacturing costs also had to be paid by the purchaser.

The Mint will no longer do this, to my knowledge.

Frankly, this Liberia thingie is a better/closer portrait than what is on our Presidential dollar.

A Nixon portrait must have some jowls, which are not reflected on the Presidential dollar.

I agree. Obviously the sideways portrait on our dollar is going to "hide" the jowls a bit, but it definitely seems they took an earlier portrait, circa VP Nixon, before the jowls fully developed.

It seems there are many medals of Presidents made...not just the inaugural medals (they do not seem to be producing one for Trump for some reason). Private minting organizations ride the profit wave. As far as coins, the dollar program covered them all, but only the six on major circulating coinage. Cheers, RickO
